The Isles of Glencoe Hotel, Scottish Highlands

Share

When I first looked at a picture of this hotel, my daughter was looking over my shoulder, and said Mummy I think it is Balamory.  Well it isn’t obviously, but to be fair I was pretty impressed she got the country right.  Apart from Arran (when the eldest was 6 months) we haven’t taken the girls to Scotland yet and having looked at the website for The Isles of Glencoe we really must rectify that.

We have considered a few places in Scotland before, but as it is a 6 hour drive from the North West up to the Scottish Highlands it would have to be something pretty special for us to make the drive.  This might just be it. Mainly because you can go on the Hogwarts Express – Wohoo! I am such a kid about Harry Potter and would LOVE to do this.  Apparently the route was famous before the films and regularly voted one of the best train rides in the world, but for me it is the Harry Potter train and you can re-live wonderful scenes from the Harry Potter films, many of which were filmed in the area.

In fact, Harry, Hemione and Ron stayed at the Isles of Glencoe whilst on-location! I have to go!

Nearby there is also Oban Sea Life Centre which is a sanctuary for orphaned seal pups – as well as an aquarium full of exotic fish. My girls would love to see the wardens feed the seal pups, and combine that with seeing otters and turtles as well.  Give them an outdoor play area as well and well they would be in heaven.

The neighbouring Action Glen activity centre – has activities for all the family either on the water or off!; (see http://glencoe.actionglen.com for more information);

The website also points out that Castle Stalker (is close by) with its tall, dramatic profile rises from a rock in Loch Linnhe, near Appin. You can book a tour of the privately-owned castle, or get the best view of it from the Stalker View Café. My three would love the IMAX film.

So we would love to visit.  Have you been? If any of you have already been, please do get in touch so that we can post your review?  This is what this site is all about in the end isn’t it.

You can find more details about The Isles of Glencoe here.
