If you’re planning a trip to Billund, Denmark, one of the biggest questions families ask is “Should we visit LEGO House or LEGOLAND Billund?”.

The honest answer? If you have the time, you really should do both.

LEGO House and LEGOLAND are completely different experiences and both are absolutely incredible in their own way. In fact, many families could easily spend two full days at each attraction and still not see or do everything.

However, if time or budget means you can only choose one, then the best option really comes down to your family’s interests, the ages of your children, and even the weather during your visit.

Here’s how to decide whether to do LEGO House or LEGOLAND Billund when you visit Denmark.

When to pick LEGO House over LEGOLAND Billund

LEGO House is completely different to LEGOLAND Billund. Firstly it is the only one in the world so if you are only planning on visiting Billund the once then this may be your only chance to experience it, whereas there are several LEGOLAND’s around the world, all different but still similar.

If that fun fact doesn’t sway you then after visiting both we feel like LEGO House is perfect for LEGO lovers. This may sound obvious but everyone can enjoy LEGOLAND even if they don’t particularly like LEGO but for those that love nothing more than to sit down with a new LEGO set and get building, Lego House is going to be the one for them as there are so many different opportunities to build. So if that sound like you then LEGO House is the one to pick.

You can spend an entire day (or two):

• Building LEGO creations
• Taking part in interactive activities
• Designing cars and racing them
• Creating digital experiences
• Exploring hands-on zones
• Completing challenges

It’s an incredibly immersive experience for LEGO enthusiasts.

You Don’t Need to Be a LEGO Expert to Enjoy LEGO House

That being said, you absolutely do not need to be a massive LEGO fan or LEGO expert to enjoy LEGO House.

There is so much to do that most families end up loving it regardless of how obsessed they are with bricks at home. We visited with three children aged 6, 13 and 16, one is not that interested in Lego, one absolutely loves LEGO and has shelves in his bedroom where he displays his builds, mainly F1 cars, and another who is just starting to get into LEGO and likes building animals. All 3 loved LEGO House and really got stuck in with all the different building activities. If you’re not a LEGO lover when you arrive you will be when you leave!

LEGO House is interactive from start to finish and feels far more engaging than a traditional museum.

The atmosphere is playful, creative, and surprisingly relaxed compared to the busy energy of a theme park.

LEGO House Is Perfect for Rainy Days

One major advantage of LEGO House is that most of it is indoors. If you’re visiting Denmark during colder months or uncertain weather, LEGO House can be a much safer option. Rain doesn’t really affect the experience, which is a huge bonus when travelling with children. However, it’s not all indoors as there are also outdoor play parks and rooftop areas, so if the sun is shinning you can still enjoy the nice weather too.

Are you foodies?

If you are a foodie family then when it comes to dining, LEGO House easily wins as it houses the famous Mini Chef restaurant which is honestly an experience in itself.

At Mini Chef, you order your food by using LEGO bricks that match the food options and then placing them in the computer at your table. Once prepared your meal is then delivered to the main area by robotic conveyor belts where you can collect it in fancy LEGO brick trays.

It’s fun, interactive, and one of the most memorable dining experiences we’ve ever done. What’s also impressive is that the food is really tasty too, it’s not just a gimmick but a great option.

LEGOLAND also has plenty of food options too, but LEGO House definitely offers the more unique experience.

True LEGO Fans Should Book LEGO Masters

If you have true LEGO enthusiasts in your family or group and you decide to book Lego House then the LEGO Masters experience is an absolutely must, all 5 of us loved every second of it.

You are taught how to build a specific thing from LEGO, for us it was LEGO figures and then given time to get creative and make changes and personalise it. It sounds easier than it is though as although you are given all the tools you need, clear instructions and help from staff you are also working against a timer which really does add the pressure, but in a good way.

It’s creative, competitive, and incredibly fun for both children and adults and something we would highly recommend.

This is one of those experiences that serious LEGO fans will remember forever.

When to book LEGOLAND Billund

LEGOLAND Billund, however, is perfect for families who love theme parks, rides, and live entertainment. Even if you’re not huge LEGO fans, LEGOLAND is still an amazing family day out because it feels much more like a traditional theme park than a LEGO attraction.

There are:

• Rollercoasters
• Water rides
• Family rides
• Playgrounds
• Live shows
• Miniland displays
• Interactive attractions

This makes it ideal for:

• Thrill seekers
• Older children
• Families wanting a high-energy day
• Visitors who love theme parks generally

One of the best things about LEGOLAND Billund is that there truly is something for all ages. Toddlers can enjoy gentler rides and playgrounds, while older kids and adults can head for the bigger attractions.

LEGO Enthusiasts Shouldn’t Miss the Car Racing Area at LEGOLAND

Even though LEGOLAND focuses more on rides and attractions, LEGO fans still have some brilliant hands-on experiences there too. One area you definitely shouldn’t miss is the LEGO car racing area, where children can build and race LEGO vehicles, this is something all three of ours loved.

So Which One Should You Choose?

Ultimately, both attractions are amazing.

If you have enough time in Billund, we would strongly recommend visiting both (plus WOW Park and Givskud Zoo) because they complement each other perfectly. However if you can only choose one, here’s the simplest way to decide:

Choose LEGO House if:

• The majority of your family/group genuinely loves LEGO
• Your children enjoy building and creating
• You’re visiting during rainy or colder weather
• You prefer interactive indoor experiences
• You want a calmer, more creative day
• You want to try Mini Chef

Choose LEGOLAND Billund if:

• The majority of your family/group loves rides and theme parks
• You have thrill seekers in your group
• You enjoy live entertainment
• You want a classic theme park atmosphere
• You’re visiting during good weather

Honestly, there isn’t a right or wrong choice here.

Both LEGOLAND Billund and LEGO House are amazing family attractions and easily two of the best experiences in Denmark for kids.
