Grease has made its electrifying return to Manchester’s Palace Theatre, bringing all the energy, charm, and nostalgic fun that fans adore. The production captures the spirit of the iconic 1950s era, complete with dazzling choreography, vibrant sets, and beloved tunes that make the audience feel right at home in Rydell High.

The Origins of Grease

For those unfamiliar with it, Grease is a musical set in the late 1950s that embodies the spirit and energy of American teens in the rock ‘n’ roll era. Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, it premiered in 1971. The story takes place at Rydell High and follows Danny Zuko, a slick greaser, and Sandy Dumbrowski, the sweet, innocent new girl.

The musical draws from Jim Jacobs’ high school experiences at William Taft High, where the T-Birds were initially called the Burger Palace Boys. The movie was softened the stage show to attract a wider audience.

The 1978 film version, starring John Travolta as Danny and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy, is arguably the most famous iteration of Grease. The movie introduced iconic new songs like the title track “Grease,” written by Barry Gibb and performed by Frankie Valli, and “You’re the One That I Want,” both of which became worldwide hits.

Staying True to Its Theatre Roots

It’s important to note that the stage version came first, and it was grittier and more realistic than the film. Grease honours its original theatrical roots, but it also includes many of the beloved elements and hit songs from the movie.

This particular production felt like a reimagined version of the film, with songs in a different order and background tracks from the movie being pushed forward to the spotlight. For a long-time fan like me, it was a refreshing take that felt like a whole new experience but still the same, if that even makes sense.

My Review of Grease The Musical

The cast was simply outstanding, with powerhouse vocals and fantastic choreography that was pure joy to watch. I especially like how the score was rearranged. For instance, “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” worked just as well in its new placement as it did in the film.

My favourite character was Alicia Belgarde’s Frenchy. I’ve always adored the “Beauty School Dropout” scene, with its roller-haired Angels—it remains one of my all-time favourite moments.

Show Highlights

It’s difficult to pick a single highlight from the show because there wasn’t a single low point. Every song was a delight, and this cast was hands down the best I’ve seen in any Grease production. Marley Fenton was the perfect Danny Zuko, capturing John Travolta’s iconic swagger while bringing his own flair to the role.

If I had to pick standout moments, Hope Dawe’s emotional performance of “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and Rebecca Stenhouse’s powerful rendition of “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” were incredible. Both songs were delivered so beautifully that, at times, the theatre was completely silent, absorbed in their performances.

Grease The Musical Feels Fresh and Timeless

Despite being over 50 years old, Grease still feels fresh and current. Subtle changes have kept it youthful and relatable while it still retains its vibrant 1950s atmosphere. I loved it just as much as I did the very first time I saw it.
