We love this author/illustrator duo and we can’t get enough of this sweet, fun-filled rhyming story. The ending is hilarious and very fun and we love the message of friendship, love and never giving up on your friends. The illustrations are characteristically quirky, filled with detail and humour and really bring Hazel Broomstick and her chums to life. An adorable read for the spooky season.

This is such a joyful story filled with a riot of raucous fun, monster mayhem and fangtastic friendships. My twins have ADORED the different-shaped letters to open in the story which really help to provide maximum engagement in this riotously fun tale. The illustrations are characteristically superb and we love Beast’s popping neon-pink colouring and the expressive detailing in the artistry. Interactive and engaging, this book is beastly fun.

What an absolutely beautiful story for the senses. The gorgeous, gentle words are accompanied by the most exquisite and expressive artwork; it’s a true joy.
Ollie and Ellie are special spooks; have been friends for centuries. They love playing dress up, going on hauntings, floating through the graveyard, learning new spells and so much more. But one midnight, Ollie wakes up feeling a bit ‘Boo’ and just wants to stay in bed. Compassionate Ellie does her very best to cheer Ollie up with a (somewhat exhausting) carousel of activities to keep them busy and happy but nothing seems to be doing the trick (or treat!). But when Ellie learns to really listen to her friend, she realises that just being with him is all that he needs.
This is a wonderful book to gently introduce the idea that it’s absolutely ok to feel a bit Boo. That we can sit with feelings and just let them be because we know that they will pass. It’s a superb introduction to mental health to get children talking about their feelings from an early age, as well as being the most heartwarmingly joyful book about friendship and shared experiences.
The artwork is absolutely mesmerising: stunning spreads of expressive artistry in atmospheric colours. We are #teamollieellie all the way!

Have you read any of the other books in this series? We are huge fans of it so I knew we should jump at the chance to review this rhyming romp of a picture book.
When a little boy is told by his mummy that there is no such thing as ghosts, he obviously doesn’t believe that for a second!! Of course ghosts exist. Surely?! They are always mentioned in his books and films. So, off the little boy goes, taking your little readers on a quest to find a ghost and prove his mummy wrong. Even with his ghost-detector kit, he’s not having much luck. He can’t find one in the old oak trees, nor in the haunted house, nor even on the street. Do ghosts really exist? You will just have to have a look yourself to find out!!
This is such a favourite in our house with my twins at the moment. They love spotting the cheeky cute ghost on almost every page of the book, they love the fun-filled bright and brilliant illustrations, they love the rhyming story which is just made to be read aloud, and they love the sweet ending to the story. They spend ages poring over each wonderfully detailed and gorgeously colourful two-fold spread of fantastic illustrations and find something new everytime they look. If you have a little one who loves this time of year, or a child who loves cheeky, fun-filled books then this is the picture book for them this October.

So, the other young witches think that she needs to learn how to be a bit more wicked. But when the young witches decide to pinch all the marshmallows at a children’s birthday party, littlest witch makes a stand. She wins everyone over with kindness, friendship and love so that everyone sees that being mean and wicked is not the only way for you to get what you want.
We loved the sweet message of kindness, compassion and friendship in this story. Littlest witch is a total sweetheart and we love her (and the funny ending page of the story!). The illustrations are adorable and filled with funny details and expressive characters. A lovely, non-spooky seasonal picture book with a message to last through the ages.

If you haven’t read any of the books in this series, they are so easy to pick up and are hilariously funny. They are by the award-winning author and illustrator duo of ‘Bad Panda’ (a huge favourite in our house) and this, the latest in the series is laugh out loud fun. You don’t need to have read the others in the series to enjoy it.
In this book, pigeons Dave and Skipper think all their Christmasses have come at once when they find a split-open packet of marshmallows. But their hunger quickly turns into fear as they find themselves in the middle of a green, brain-spilling-out, zombie apocalypse!!! They are both terrified and trying to focus on survival… but there are some delicious-looking green jam-filled zombie biscuits around. It would certainly be wise to stay away from them ….. but can Dave ever resist a biscuit?!
With brilliantly funny black and white drawings and some comic style speech bubble pages, this is a wonderfully visual read as well as a brilliant piece of funny- feathered fiction. A spooktacularly seasonal read to make you cosy up and get your giggle pants on. We love it.

But Eglantine is going to show him (you go girl!!)! She must learn to untie her magic and use it to save her father and her house. But she needs to find her witchspark in order to do so.
Meanwhile, Princess Victoria is terrified. She has realised that she has magic. She can’t be a leader if she has magic!! She needs to get rid of it. And the more she worries, the more her magic spirals out of control. Both Eglantine and Victoria turn to the outlawed Miss Hegotty and her witch lessons on the “Correspondence Course for Aspiring (and Ungovernable) Witches”. Can this secret magic help them to find a way for them to meet and help each other?
This was an unputtdownable magical adventure story which was brimming with warmth, wonder and witchy vibes. I adored the world created by the author (I had strong The House at the Edge of Magic and Encanto vibes) and didn’t want to leave it. I simply adored Arthur, the dapper, loyal wyvern butler. I loved the strong female protagonists in the story and the fact that Eglantine had a “little arm”, faced ablelist criticisms and yet was a determined and powerful witch. The illustrations add even more character, atmosphere and fun to this quirky historical-fantasy story. I loved the magic, the adventure, the fun and the hope in this story – it’s sure to cast its spell over you. Five stars from us.

What can I say?! Words cannot do justice to how much I loved this book! Oh Mallsy Ballsy Bumcrack, what a tale.
Mallory Vayle is rather unusual. You see, she can see and hear dead people. But poor Mallory has recently become orphaned and when she is taken by her rather spooky-looking Aunty Lilith to a creepy castle to live, things go from bad to worse. Her parents’ ghosts are ghost-napped by an evil spirit which lurks in the castle and Mallory accidentally unearths a rather talkative ancient skull. She has to form an unlikely alliance with old Maggoty Skull so that he can teach her the dark skills of a necromancer that she needs to try and get her parents ghosts back. But is Mallory willing to do everything it takes to get her parents’ ghosts back? Will she fall into the deep, dark world of necromancy and stay in the shadows? Not likely if Maggoty keeps up with his incessant (and hilarious) commentary and definitely not if he keeps calling her Manky-bottom Mallsy Boo! Can the pair vanquish the wicked spirit of Hellysh Spatzl and free Mallory’s parents? They might even become friends along the way …
Maggsy and Mallsy forever!!! This book was just phenomenal. A unique and brilliant mix of delicious darkness combined with hilarious humour. Chilling and chortle-enducing. Dark and light. Deeply moving yet side-splittingly funny. Maggoty Skull might just be my favourite character ever. I mean, what’s not to love about a green-eyed, wig-wearing skull with verbal diarrhoea?! And I have to mention the illustrations and page adornments which add so much atmosphere and brilliance to an already wonderful book. A sensational, spooktacular read. Five stars from us.

What a book from Skye McKenna! I love this story of mystery and magic from start to finish. This is the third in the Hedgewitch series and Cassie Morgan is desperate to earn her Sapling pin so she can get her Witch’s Licence. But in order to do so, she has to train a beginner witch and the newest member of the coven is rather controversial!
When a letter arrives from Cassie’s cousin, Sebastian, in Cornwall, Cassie and her friends go off to investigate a mystery that he would like help with. And Sebastian just so happens to live in a Faerie border town: Porthmorven, with its very own protector from magical mayhem and secrets of the sea, the Seawitch. But the Seawitch is locked in grief at the loss of her family member and the wicked Erl King is persuading witches and magical beings to walk on the dark side with him. Porthmorven and its inhabitants are not safe. Cassie and her friends, both old and new, are going to have to dive down into the deep to solve the secrets of the sea and put a stop to the Erl King’s plans.
That’s a lot for one girl to achieve!! This story is an action-packed page-turner filled with magic and wonder. I loved the introduction of Robin and the story around the prejudices that this caused. I loved the characters involved, their loyalty and friendship and also finding out about Cassie’s background in further detail. This is the perfect autumnal story; a must-read for anyone who would like to be transported to a fantastical world. We can’t wait for the next one here! Witches hats off to you SkyeMcKenna!

This fang-filled fun adventure series burst into our life last year and we have not been able to get enough since! We adored this, the third book, in these frivolously fun reads by Matt Brown.
Kevin is a villainous vampire who is almost 11. Except he isn’t villainous. He’s lovely, and caring, and open-minded. There’s also his best friend Susie, who is a human; his Dog (who isn’t a dog!), Brannie, the dragon, and a purple draffin called Gerald!
In this book it’s time for Kevin’s Gloaming- a three-part test that all almost-11-year-old vampires have to take part in to prove that they are worthy of their vampire cloak and status. Pressure, right?! Right. If that’s not scary enough, if Kevin fails, he’ll be banished from the vampire world forever. Oh, and he has to perform all his tasks in front of the terrifying and rule-abiding Bernard the Destroyer. He’s written the BIG BOOK OF VAMPIRE RULES and he’s a total stickler for them! Will Kevin be able to complete the melting challenge and pass his gloaming? Or will he be banished forever?
We laughed out loud at this fangtastically fun adventure. We adored the hilarious extracts from the BIG BOOK OF VAMPIRE RULES dotted throughout the book and the storyline which highlights the importance of friendship, acceptance and allowing people (and vampires) to have second chances, to make mistakes and not be penalised forever for them! Kevin’s sweet and caring nature – his calm nature in the face of a crisis and his soft, comforting words to the creatures – is really highlighted in this story. The black and white illustrations are superb, adding character and atmosphere to the humorous, vampire-filled story. For fans of Monster Hunting for Beginners, this is a fang-filled, five star read for us and we can’t wait for the next in the series, pretty please?!

Bridget Vanderpuff and the Monster Mountain Mystery – Martin Stewart (author), David Habben (illustrator), Zephyr book (Head of Zeus, part of Bloomsbury Publishing plc) (publisher)
Bridget is back!! Fun and frivolous, filled with lashings of love and exciting escapades, my eldest daughter and I adored the other books in this series by Martin Stewart, which combines baking, science and adventure within its pages. Even if you haven’t read the other books though, this story can very easily be read as a stand-alone.
Bridget, Tom and Mr Vanderpuff are bound for Butteralp, a village in Europe which boasts the best chocolate in the world! But life in Butteralp is not so fun at the moment: the village is in chaos: it’s being terrorised by a monstrous monster, roaring and hunting the villagers and they are all so scared that they want to cancel the Cocoacobanas festival. Will Bridget and Tom be able to stop the fiendish monster? Plunged into a mountainous world of chocolate, creamhorns and cheese, the friends realise that there is more to this monster mystery than they had first envisaged!
This is a brilliant addition to this series and a great spooky, seasonal read. We love the hilarious escapades of the brave and capable Bridget and the mouth-wateringly delicious descriptions of the baking world. I loved the elements of spooky monster alongside the fun and my love for Bridget just grows and grows. She’s clever, fun, brave, inventive, loving, caring, capable and adventure-seeking. A girl who is both rescuer and rescuee all at the same time. I also loved the fun black and white illustrations dotted throughout the story, really bringing the adventures of Bridget and the mountains to life. And there are even yummy recipes at the back of the book. It would be monstrously silly of you not to get your hands on a copy of this book!

A Girl called Corpse – Reece Carter (author), Usborne Publishing Ltd (publisher)
This was a marvellous piece of magical middle grade writing that I just.could.not.put.down!! I read this in only a day or so, so in love was I with the style of writing and so desperate was I to find out what happened to poor little Corpse.
This book is superbly written from the point of view of a young ghost child called Corpse. She’s fashioned herself a body made of wax, seaweed for hair and polished abalone shells for eyes. She has no memory of who she used to be, how she died, or why she has ended up on the rock-that-doesn’t-exist, and more specifically, in the Witches’ sea shack. In fact, Corpse is all alone apart from her friend Simon, the huntsman spider. That is until the ghost of an old man visits her and leaves her with an enigmatic message before he fades off into Death Proper. The message hints at treasure which just might reunite Corpse with her family and her name. She sets off on a quest to find the answers to all the questions that have been swimming round her head for years. But complicated thoughts are not the only thing Corpse will have to contend with. She must battle the evil witches themselves in an epic showdown of magic and mayhem as Corpse tries to figure out who is friend and who is foe.
Brimming with magic and monsters of all varieties (and some of them are very cute!), this book weaves a spellbinding huntsman-sized-spider-web of fast-paced enchantment and adventure around your hands so you cannot put it down. It’s compelling in the extreme and written with such emotion. I loved the themes of love and friendship overpowering unkindness and evil and I adored that the strength of family (whatever that might look like (and it differs in so many ways)) gives off the most powerful magic of all: love. The ending is both sublime and poignant, with a final twist of a chapter that I did not see coming (and which brought a lump to my throat). I really do hope you go out and get yourself a copy of this book for the young magician in your life: you won’t regret it.

The Lonely Lighthouse of Elston-Fright – Reece Carter (author), Usborne Publishing Ltd (publisher)
The second in this fantastic series by Reece Carter (see my review of the first book, above), I could not wait to continue Corpse, Simon, Girl and Flip’s journey. This book flits between narrative by Corpse and narrative by Flip and I loved that we got both viewpoints.
Flip’s family have always been the Lightkeepers living in the lighthouse of Elston-Fright and protecting the townsfolk from magical mayhem and gruesome ghouls. But when Flip and Corpse’s friend Simon (the huntsman spider!) is spirited away by an ancient and evil wind called a Poltergust, and the friends do all they can to rescue him, Flip begins to learn that his family’s boasts and claims are all based on lies! The friends need to find and take back the missing Light to the lighthouse and restore its magic but nothing is anywhere near as straightforward as it should be….. the more Flip, Corpse and Girl dig for answers, the more questions arise. Dark secrets and strange behaviour from the past connects them to the present and the future and they must work out what to believe.
I adored this wonderful work of fiction. It’s filled with trickster weather, ghoulish gusts, magical mayhem, ghost girls, spiteful seafoam sprites, spiders, secrets, witches and wonder. But it is also filled with love, friendship, imagination and deliciously dark adventure which will have you turning the pages as quickly as you can. The end of the book leaves the reader on a cliffhanger so I am praying that there will be another gorgeously ghostly book to follow?! Pretty please!

The illustrations are eye-catching and wonderfully atmospheric, really bringing this fantastic fantasy world to life. We particularly love the messages of the book about learning to accept yourself for what you are, the power of self belief and learning to love yourself, as well as acceptance of others, kindness, compassion and forgiveness. Delightful demons and fantastical fairies abound in this sweet, fantastical adventure art story.
