Share

Having just returned from an incredible trip to Istanbul without the kids I wanted so share our tips and what we got up to in a weekend. Istanbul is a city that effortlessly combines ancient history with vibrant modernity. Whether you’re a history buff or a foodie, there’s something for everyone. If you’re planning a child-free weekend escape to this mesmerising city, we’ve put together our top 10 recommendations for making the most of your time. From airport transfers to food tours and breathtaking sights, here’s how to enjoy a stress-free and memorable trip.

We stayed at Best Point Hotels which was in a brilliant spot and suited us perfectly as we stayed in a 3 bedroom apartment for the five of us. It wasn’t luxurious but it was in a great spot and the included breakfast and the rooftop views of the Blue Mosque was spectacular.

1. Stress-Free Transfers with Welcome Pickups

Getting to and from the airport can set the tone for the rest of your trip. We highly recommend using Welcome Pickups for a hassle-free transfer. You’ll find yourself at ease, knowing your transportation is sorted, and you can use the extra time to relax and plan your adventures.

2. Indulge in a Secret Food Tour

Food lovers, rejoice! One of the highlights of our trip was the Secret Food Tour. This tour offers an insider’s view of Istanbul’s rich culinary scene. From traditional Turkish delights to hidden street food gems, this tour was an absolute must-do. We can’t recommend it highly enough for those wanting to taste the true essence of Istanbul.

3. Relax at Cağaloğlu Hamamı

No trip to Istanbul is complete without experiencing a traditional Turkish bath. The Cağaloğlu Hamamı is one of the most renowned hamams in the city, and for good reason. We left feeling rejuvenated and pampered after an hour of indulgence. Perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing!

4. Marvel at the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque

Two of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks are the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. We recommend visiting these at the end of the day, as it was much quieter with no queues. Both are stunning architectural masterpieces that offer a glimpse into the city’s rich historical and religious past.

5. Mezze and Cocktails at Roof Mezze 360

For an unforgettable dining experience, book a table at Roof Mezze 360. Make sure to request an outside table for panoramic views of the city. The mezze was delightful, and the cocktails were equally impressive. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic evening under the stars.

6. Spice Bazaar Over the Grand Bazaar

While the Grand Bazaar is a popular tourist spot, we found the Spice Bazaar more enjoyable. It’s less crowded, making it easier to browse and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. Plus, it’s a great place to pick up some spices and teas to bring home as souvenirs.

7. Ferry Across to the Asian Side

No trip to Istanbul is complete without taking a ferry across the Bosphorus to the Asian side of the city. Not only does it offer a unique perspective of the city, but it’s also a great excuse to indulge in the Secret Food Tour mentioned above!

8. Explore Topkapi Palace

The Topkapi Palace is another unmissable historical site. We managed to explore the palace in just a couple of hours, but if you’re a history enthusiast, you could easily spend the whole day here. Visiting later in the afternoon (around 4 pm) allowed us to avoid long queues and crowds.

What to do in Istanbul in a weekend

9. Discover the Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern is a fascinating underground marvel, and although the queue might seem long, it moves quickly. We waited just ten minutes to enter, so there’s no need to pay extra for skip-the-line tickets. It’s an eerie yet beautiful experience that adds a unique touch to your visit.

10. Drinks at the Blue House Hotel Rooftop

To end the day on a high note, head to the Blue House Hotel Rooftop for sunset drinks. While the cocktails may not match those at Roof Mezze 360, the views of both mosques at sunset are unbeatable. We suggest opting for a refreshing G&T and soaking in the magical atmosphere.
