If you are thinking of booking a trip to Billund, Denmark, or are simply looking for a holiday away from the UK that is family friendly and full of adventure, then let me introduce you to Lalandia. We recently stayed here for 4 nights as a family of 5 with children aged, 6, 13 and 16 and we are already talking about when we can return, here is everything you need to know.

Location

Lalandia is in a great location as it is less than 10 minutes in a car or taxi from the airport and there are regular buses that you can use that stop right outside the airport meaning your holiday starts pretty much as soon as you get off the plane with no long transfers needed. It is also perfectly locate for those that are visiting Billund for Legoland and Legohouse too, with both being less than 10 minutes away in a car, again being accessible by the local buses or even walking distance depending on how you and your children are feeling.

Checking in

Checking in couldn’t be any easy. If you book direct then you will be emailed a few days before your arrival with your accommodation details and a code. At 3pm you can go straight you your accommodation and let yourself in, here you will find your passes and any information you need. No big queues, no drawn out check in processes, just straight to holiday mode, it couldn’t have been any easier.

Accommodation at Lalandia

There are lots of different accommodation types that you can book at Lalandia depending on your group size, budget and needs. We stayed in a Design Plus 6 holiday home and found it ideal for a family stay. It was modern, spotlessly clean, and had all the mod cons including a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer that we could possibly need for a self-catering holiday, it was like a home from home. There also was loads of space both inside and outside, so it never felt cramped.

It had two dinning tables, one inside and one outside the back as well as extra seating outside the front plus seating at the breakfast bar so we could all sit and eat together or separate and enjoy the sun no matter which side of the house it was on.

In our house we had three bedrooms, all the beds were singles but in two of the rooms they were pushed together to make doubles. There was also a wooden cot not a travel cot in the master room and we noticed a highchair too, having these things as standard makes travelling so much easier for families with smaller kids and babies as there is no need to worry if they will run out before you check in.

Top tip: remember to either book your bedding in advance or bring your own. Also, beds are not made up for you, so you’ll need to make them yourself on arrival. It wasn’t a major issue, but it’s definitely worth knowing before you travel and if you do bring your own bedding remember all beds are singles so double sheets and duvet covers wont fit properly. That being said the beds were extremely comfy and we all slept really well.

For us the design plus 6 was perfect and I would highly recommend it for families with kids.

Easy to Get Around

One thing we really appreciated was the free shuttle bus that runs between the accommodation areas and the main centre. Our particular house was only a 10 minute walk from the centre but we still used the bus on occasion, mainly when the youngest was very tired after a long day swimming and the one time we came out of the main area to find it was pouring down with rain despite it being lovely and sunny when had gone in – that’s the Danish weather for you.

Included Activities

One of the best things about staying at Lalandia is how much is already included in your stay. There are several parks, a field where you can go and pet the very friendly goats, the Aquadome and the inside play area, Monky Tonks.

The Aquadome

The Aquadome water park is fantastic and was definitely a highlight of our stay. It catered for our whole family which with age gaps like ours can often be difficult (6, 13 and 16). It has a variety of different pools, including a wave pool, outdoor pool and a cave pool where you can swim down to the bottom and see the fish in the aquarium and people walking past, just remember to take your goggles.

It also has different designated areas such as a toddler friendly section with a slide and shallow water, lights and water shooters and a large spa pool as well as children’s play area with splash zones, slides and water drops as well as adult only areas in the form of saunas.

Then there are the slides with every age catered for from small ones to fast ones, drop slides to single riders where you can race each other to the bottom and even ones that you can ride together.

Two other areas that were a big hit were the lazy river for the 6 year old who liked to tootle around in a rubber ring people watching and the crazy river that boys liked to fly round! Like I said there is something for everyone here.

We visited the aquadome twice during our stay but if time had allowed we would have visited again and again as it really was brilliant.

Top Tip – Remember to shower before you enter the pool, including your hair as they do check as you enter and will send you back if they don’t think you have showered.

Top Tip – Unlike most UK pools you are allowed to take photos inside the Aquadome but there are lots of splash zones dotted around so if you want to take your phone in with you invest in a water proof case to be on the safe side.

You also get access to Monky Tonky Land, there indoor play area, included with your stay. This is perfect for children up to about 12 and is ideal for rainy days or evenings when everyone still has energy to burn. There is a separate section for toddlers as well as a couple of football areas and the main play area which has the usual climbing equipment and slides which kids love.

What is different about Monky Tonks compared to play areas back home though is that right up at the top there are two trampolines opposite two TV screens where children can play interactive games whilst bouncing which was lots of fun and a good way to tire them out!

Extra Activities Worth Trying

There are also loads of additional activities available on a pay-as-you-go basis, including:

• Shuffleboard
• Sky Rider
• Climbing walls
• Fitness suite
• Badminton
• Padel
• Mini Golf
• High Jump trampolines
• Ice skating
• And plenty more

If you’re planning to do lots of activities then I recommend you look at the Gold Wristbands as they can work out really good value for money as it makes most attractions all-inclusive.

Our bands cost approximately £35 per person for 5 days and each activity is roughly £5 so for us it was worth it.

Top Tip – These sell out so book in advance when you book your holiday to avoid disappointment.

Self Catering and Eating out at Lalandia

The on-site supermarket is excellent and has pretty much everything you need for a self-catering holiday. Prices are slightly higher than supermarkets outside the resort, but honestly not by much, and the convenience is worth it for most things.

If you have a car, or head into town, Netto is a more affordable option for bigger food shops and essentials.

Another option is to eat in Lalandia itself as there are a number of restaurants and take aways to choose from. We ate in Ristorante il Bambino, the all inclusive restaurant, where you can help yourself to starters, mains, desserts and drinks, including wine and beer for 1 hour 45 minutes, making it very good value for money, especially when you consider one pint in the bar is about £9.

One half of the restaurant is Mexican and the other is Italian and you can eat from either or both sides ensuring lots of options for your whole party. We preferred the food on the Italian side finding it to be really good quality with so much choice and the kids loved the make your own ice cream sundae stand.

Overall review of Lalandia

Overall we had an incredible stay at Lalandia and we only wished we were onsite more to enjoy all the facilities. It is the perfect location for a stand alone holiday in Billund or for those looking for a base as they explore Legoland and Legohouse. What really stood out to us about Lalandia was how easy it made family travel feel, everything is geared up for children and families an all the staff were so friendly and accommodating at all times. The combination of spacious accommodation, free swimming and play areas, excellent facilities, and the unbeatable location makes it an ideal family holiday regardless of whether you are just want a weekend break or two weeks away, Lalandia ticks all the boxes.
