Bugsy Malone The Musical – a toe tapping delight which the whole family loved. As huge fans of the original film by Alan Parker we had high expectation for this musical adaptation and it did not disappoint!
Set in down town New York, the story draws us into Fat Sam’s speakeasy bar and the turf wars of rival hoodlums Fat Sam and Dandy Dan propelling us into the lives of our heroes Bugsy and Blousy. True to the original hit, and where the magic, charm and comedy lies ,the leading roles are all played by 9-15 years old , armed with splurge guns , custard pies and over sized suits.
Supporting these little pocket dynamos is an ensemble of adults, whose choreography and dancing brought fun and energy onto the stage and into the performance. The show is worth watching for the final mega mix alone, which had the entire audience on its feet. The excitement in the young actors eyes was palpable and matched the electric buzz off stage . The audience was left with a huge dollop of feel good energy and a little bit of twinkle in their toes.
Everything about the performance brought a smile to our faces- from the atmospheric set design ( all of which was set in the darkness of night ) to the stand out costumes and athletic choreography. Our favourite numbers were the show stopping “So you want to be a boxer” and the hilarious car chase sequence.
We were gifted tickets to Bugsy Malone the Musical and attended the press night at Leeds Grand Theatre . The production is currently on tour around the UK until February 2023. This a great show for families , there is something very appealing for children watching young performers take control and lead the adults on stage , and the young cast did this with vigour , audience interaction and comedy timing. With a running time of 2 hours including intervals, it’s also a very easy and enjoyable way to spend an evening as the nights start to draw in. We loved our night at Fat Sam’s – thanks Bugsy Malone .
