Bringing to life the FUN of choosing a pet, this book is a hilarious guide to many usual and unusual household pets. Your reader can use it to look up over 40 different pets and find out all about their quirky characteristics- a Burmilla cat sounds amazing to me, it’s like a friendly dog wearing eye-liner- how cuddly they are, their special superpowers, their wants and needs … and what you should bear in mind before owning one as a pet. Cats and dogs are covered in the most detail, with 18 breeds of cat detailed and 19 breeds of dog, but we also loved the pages on other types of pet. I particularly loved the comments on stick insects, having fond memories of mine when I was younger!
This book is just brilliant. It’s quirky, it is filled with funny facts and humorous portraits of pet characteristics and it is illustrated in a zany, bright style which depicts the adorable animals is glorious detail. Funny, fresh and filled with personality, we love Pet Selector! A huge winner in our animal-mad household (but I am still not getting any more pets … except maybe a canary or two, some hens… and maybe a horse – none of these are covered in this book though… book 2 anyone?!).

What a book!! We adored Flora Delargy’s Titanic work so we knew we would love this stunning book but it really blew us away!
Following the story of four brave and spirited young women, this is a work of non-fiction like no other. Shaaw Tlaa belonged to the First Nation Tagish/Tlingit peoples. She married a man named George Carmack and became known as Kate. It was she who first discovered gold in 1896 in the Yukon Territory. But, such was the discrimination in those times that the discovery was not registered in her name, but that of her husband. Once word was out about the gold though, there was an inevitable stampede to find more….
Women were warned off. They were told on the newspapers that the gold fields were “no place for women” but this book follows the trail of three pioneering women who followed in Kate’s footsteps: Martha Black, Nellie Cashman and Belinda Mulrooney.
Each woman’s story is set out in fascinating detail, inspiring young readers everywhere with their ingenuity and braveness in the face of discrimination, mockery, danger and injustice. We loved the other books that we reviewed in this series of non-fiction for children aged 6-9 (all of my children – yey!) which has world-leading experts introducing curious minds to various interesting topics.
In this, the latest addition to the series, your young readers can be prepared for mishaps, accidents and emergencies and learn how to save a life with Dr Ronx. Written in easy to digest text blocks of information with plenty of colourful illustrations, this book is an absolute god-send for teaching children what to do in a situation where there has been an accident or emergency. I keep getting nose-bleeds at the moment – I think it’s my age!- and now I have three “helpers” telling me what to do when I do! We love the inspirational stories about children saving lives at the beginning of the book and the help and advice on what to do in an emergency. From burns to bleeding, bee stings to broken bones, this is a really useful tool for children (and adults!) to help understand the human body, its reactions and its frailties. There is information on what to do if someone is choking, how to put someone in the recovery position and how to perform CPR. But all of this is set out in a bright, colourful and non-scary way so that children do not get upset or become overwhelmed by the subject matter.
A brilliantly inspiring and empowering book, filled with useful and life-saving facts and gorgeous illustrations, we are captivated.

I am always on the lookout for books which will educate us all about other cultures and religions. And here’s a brilliant book about Hanukkah for my children. This series of books is written in a sweet style and an accessible format and is a blend of fact and fiction.
Your reader can follow Lior and his family as they celebrate the eight days of Hanukkah in this wonderful first-hand account. Lior explains that Hanukkah is a special time for Jewish people: a time which is packed with delicious food, lighting the menorah, playing spin the dreidel, reciting blessings and lots of time spent with friends and family having fun and celebrating.
We love the fun facts at the back of the book, the explanation of the lunar and solar calendars, the interactive elements such as making an edible menorah and, in particular, the beautiful idea to create your own tzedakah box which brings charity, kindness and caring to the fore. My children have been captivated by the idea of making latkes and apple sauce and we love the fun quiz to take at the end of the book.
Educational, well-written, engaging and filled with love, life, joy and community spirit, this is a fabulous book which builds empathy and understanding. I wish there had been books like this around when I was growing up because I would have loved them!

You couldn’t watch the Olympics earlier this year and not be impressed by the glittering gymnast Simone Biles!! My eldest daughter adores her so I jumped at the chance to review the latest in this fantastic series of non-fiction books. And this bold and beautiful book is a real show-stopper, much like the star herself!
As a child, little Simone was always bouncing around on her grandparents’ sofa and when she went to a gym on a school trip and started copying the gymnasts, the coaches there were so impressed, they asked her family to sign her up. From that moment on, she never looked back. Over the years, her talent grew and she earned her spot on the US Senior Team aged just 14! She won 4 gold medals at her first Olympic Games and became the greatest gymnast of all time. But, after years of competing and focussing on her body, she realised she needed to take some time to focus on her mind too. After a break focussing on her mental health, she came back to the floor (and the beam, box and bars!!) and cartwheeled her way to champion once more.
As usual, there is a fantastic further facts and black and white photo section at the back of the book where your little reader can learn more and be inspired by the lifetime achievements of this sporting superstar. I cannot sign off without mentioning the artwork. It absolutely stunning: vibrant colours and gorgeous illustrations of gymnastic moves and fabulous outfits. This is a superb book about some of the Earth’s strangest places, and we have loved exploring it. Each “wife” of Henry VIII is discussed in detail across the fun pages of this book. Your reader can delve into the Tudor times and listen to court gossip and scandal, learn all about the political power plays and indulge in the fascinating fashions of the period. Each Queen has a short biography written about her under the stunning portrait of her in the book. I confess, I was a Tudor ignoramus, having previously thought that period in history rather dull but my daughters and I read each page with fascination and awe. A fun, highly educational read with paragraphs of information set out in easy to digest chunks and plenty of vibrant illustrations to bring the history to life.

Salvador Dali’s paintings fascinated me when I was growing up so I was so excited to review this book so that my children could learn more about him and his surrealist techniques too.
From an early age, Salvador believed that he would achieve great things in his life. His parents gave into his every wish but his classmates thought he was rather bizarre and teased him for his strange ideas. He didn’t really enjoy academics but he loved art and he had his first exhibition at the tender age of 14! Aged 17 he was admitted to the prestigious Royal Academy for Fine Arts in Madrid, only to he expelled four years later when he refused to be examined by his teachers, saying he was more intelligent than they were!! He joined a group of artists who drew their inspiration from dreams and Salvador mesmerised the world with his surrealist artwork. Throughout his life, he created excitement and wonder wherever he went, even turning up at one event in a car filled with cauliflowers!!
Throughout his life he had an inner confidence and sense of fun, asking himself each day: what wonderful things will I achieve today?!

And, there’s also a quiz to take at the end of the book just to check if you have been paying attention!!

The book is split into sections – Earth’s past, present and future- and is crammed with fascinating, unique and often humorous facts which will have your readers gasping in awe, or saying “wow- listen to this!”! We’ve learnt so much – bet you don’t know the windiest spot on the planet (not to brag but we do now!!) – and have particularly enjoyed the final part of the book which deals with what we can do to help climate change.
The pages are filled with wonderfully colourful cartoon-like illustrations bringing the details of Earth’s story to eye-catching life. We love the A Day in the Life of …. Books by the same brilliant author/illustrator combo and here same quirky style is true: the cartoon-style of the vibrantly bright graphics are absolutely stunning, adding a quirky and engaging style to this work of non-fiction which makes it brilliant for reluctant readers. My youngest adores graphic novels and fact books so this book is a dream for her! It’s a superb book to dip in and out of, but would be a fun, fact-filled experience all in one sitting as well. Fascinating, fun, colourful and clever: this is what all non-fiction books should be made of.

My eldest daughter went on a school trip to see the immersive Van Gogh exhibition and she has been fascinated by this amazing artist ever since. This new addition to this fantastic series is a brilliant introduction to Van Gogh’s life and artwork and makes for a stunning read with your little ones.
As a child, little Vincent loved spending time in nature and going for walks with his family. When he grew up, he tried his hand at many different jobs – from art dealer to a teacher, bookseller to a teacher – but he didn’t seem to excel at any of them. In his long letters to his brother, Theo, he included drawings telling of his unhappiness. So, Theo suggested that his hand might best be occupied with a paintbrush in it. He developed his own style over the years and was inspired by the outside world, painting the sky, the trees, the city … he even painted himself. He always struggled with his emotions but he found that painting was a wonderful way for him to find some light in the darkness and he used his painting to express himself.
As is characteristic with this series, there is a fantastic further facts and black and white photo section at the back of the book where your little reader can learn more and be inspired by the lifetime achievements of this amazing artist. And of course, the artwork in the book itself is simply sublime. Brushstrokes of colour and vibrancy wash over the pages and bring Van Gogh’s stunning paintings to life in vibrant colours.
