This advice will hopefully help make the process as smooth and fun-filled as possible for you and your fellow travellers.

The best time to visit the Arctic

Most travellers recommend visiting the Arctic in the summer months – specifically between June and September. During this time, your family will be able to experience the wonders of all-day sunlight, and the joys of more active wildlife.

There is also greater potential for water activities and boat tours during summer in the Arctic, as sea ice is low. Temperatures during this season tend to range between 4 degrees Celsius (39 Fahrenheit) and 12 degrees Celsius (54 Fahrenheit).

It is important to note that recently, Arctic temperatures have been climbing amid a greater frequency of extreme weather and climate events. Measures are being taken to prevent this increase from escalating, though it is essential that we all do our part (especially Arctic tourists!) to respect and maintain the natural environment.

What to wear to visit the Arctic

If you’re visiting the Arctic in the summer – family-friendly destinations include Finland, Sweden, and Norway – there can be some confusion around what to wear.

Each member of your family must cultivate a wardrobe that can adapt to various temperatures and conditions prior to your Arctic trip. Essentials include rubber or muck boots that reach your knees, so that you will be able to navigate ice-cold puddles. You should also be looking to bring waterproof jackets and mittens with you.

You should also bring insulating layers to fit beneath your outerwear; a moisture-wicking base layer of wool is recommended, as is a fleece jacket as a mid-layer. Wool socks and neck warmers are remarkably effective at keeping the cold at bay, too. Some other easily overlooked must-haves include sunscreen, as well as eye masks – even smaller ones for any children – to keep the bright midnight sun from disturbing sleep.

Yes, you read that mention right: believe it or not, sunscreen is a must-have for all Arctic trips. Too many adventurers to the Arctic consider sunscreen to be a “hot holiday” essential only. This couldn’t be further from the truth!

The ultraviolet (UV) rays of the Arctic midnight sun are powerful, and the sun is always high in the sky. So, it’s a non-negotiable for you to protect all exposed skin – otherwise, your face and lips can be vulnerable to cracking. This cardinal rule is especially important for children, whose skin can be extra-sensitive and prone to damage.

Where to go in the Arctic

The Arctic region is expansive, and covers eight countries! Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Alaska are included. Within these territories, there are so many different activities to choose from and places to go.

Visitors can discover a Santa Lapland holiday in Finland, where children and adults alike can enjoy a beautiful cabin-style resort and multiple activities, such as a husky safari and snowmobile trip. Of course, the best part is meeting Santa.

Aside from such festive fun, another Arctic “must-do” is visiting an ice hotel in Sweden, which can provide family-friendly accommodation and entertainment.

Or what about snorkelling with orcas in Norway? For the youngest travellers, this adventure may not be appropriate, but older children and capable teenagers will almost certainly enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially when sharing it with parents.

How to pick the best Arctic package holiday

With so much choice out there when it comes to picking out a package holiday for your family trip to the Arctic, you may be wondering “how do I choose the best holiday for us all?” Fortunately, there are a few recommended tips for you to follow when it comes to picking the right deal. We advise that you:

  1. Thoroughly research the company

A good company will have a long history of providing package holidays, and reliable customer testimonials that are honest and trustworthy. You should look for qualities such as ATOL, ABTA, and other financial protection in their deals to keep your holiday investment safe, too.

We also recommend looking for a company that provides 24/7 customer service whilst you’re abroad. This means that if problems arise and you need expert help to handle them, you will be in safe hands.

  • Check for special offers and discounts

Some companies provide seasonal discounts or special offers for family trips, which can reduce the expense of your Arctic holiday.

Whilst discounts aren’t a requirement of a good package holiday, money-saving goes a long way when you’re taking the entire family abroad. Your savings could be dedicated to additional activities, or trying local, indigenous food during your time there!

  • Consider flexibility and customisation options

A good package holiday can be tailored to your interests and schedule, without a rigid itinerary – although some travellers may prefer this! If you’d like a little “wiggle room” for your family trip, customisation options are always something to look out for from your holiday provider.

There you have it – a complete guide to the things to bear in mind, and do, when you’re looking to organise and enjoy an Arctic break with members of your family in tow. We wish you and your relatives the very best for your upcoming adventure in this captivating part of the world!
