A mile from Haltwhistle in Northumberland, surrounded by beautiful countryside you’ll find the delightful Herding Hill Farm. A warm welcome definitely awaits you here, and we were thrilled to be invited to spend a weekend in the 3-bedroom luxury lodge complete with hot tub.

We arrived on Friday night after work, and to be honest a bit frazzled from the week. We were grateful to find everything set up ready so literally dumped the suitcases, changed into swimwear and jumped into the hot tub. Not having to bring towels or linen, as they are included, was a huge bonus. After an hour or so we realised we needed to eat so ordered 3 pizzas from the campsite takeaway for the five of us along with a bag of chips: delicious and plentiful.

The luxury lodge is located at the front the campsite close to Reception. There is a small enclosed private garden with views over the animal petting farm which we loved! The donkey and alpacas were adorable.

Inside the lodge is enormous and spotlessly clean, but it still has a homely feel, rather than show-home. The furnishing is modern and the layout is ideal for a family. The master bedroom has an en-suite and large storage cupboards that have a clothes airer and highchair in. Very useful if you have toddlers. We also liked that there was a bath in the main bathroom as our children prefer baths. The beds were really comfortable and we all slept soundly until late in the morning!

The kitchen is well-equipped with literally everything you need for food preparation and cooking. Facilities include a hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and freezer. We were surprised to find a Nespresso coffee machine and pods! We also marvelled that the owners had included a washing machine and tumble dryer tucked away in the cupboards near the from door. Is there anything they haven’t thought of for a family holiday?

In the living room there is a gigantic and super-comfortable sofa. There is a Smart TV and free high-speed WiFi (our teenager was pleased with that!). We were able to log in to our Netflix and watch our usual shows in the evening once the fire pit died out.

Dogs too are made extremely welcome at Herding Hill Farm. There is a good dog walk and warm dog showers in the amenities block. In the lodge, there is a dog bed (although ours preferred the sunshine on the decking during the day), food and water bowls, and the garden area is secure. The addition of treats in the welcome pack was very much appreciated by Molly!

We imagined that we would be out and about all weekend but apart from a couple of hours in Haltwhistle and lunch at the Black Bull (the oldest pub in Haltwhistle) we stayed at the lodge, enjoying the views and having a relaxing time together. If you do want to explore, Hadrian’s Wall attractions, such as Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman Forts are well worth visiting. Kielder Water and Forest Park is also within an hour.

As we packed up to return to reality we all agreed this is a fantastic place to take a break. Family and pet friendly, home from home and luxurious all at the same time. We highly recommend the lodge for a family holiday. Thank you, Herding Hill Farm!
