What Is a Guaranteed Cruise Cabin on A Cruise Ship?

A guaranteed cabin is a cruise booking type in which you reserve a cabin in a particular category without knowing the exact cabin number or location at the time of booking. This could be an inside cabin, outside cabin, balcony, or suite category. The cruise line guarantees you a cabin within that category, but the specific placement, deck, location, or proximity to elevators is assigned closer to departure. Guaranteed cabins are ideal for passengers who want a lower price and are flexible about where they stay on the ship.

How It Works

1. Book by category, not location: You choose the type of cabin (inside, balcony, etc.) rather than a specific room. The code is GYT, which means you are guaranteed a cabin in the category you book.
2. Cabin assignment: The cruise line assigns your exact cabin, usually a few weeks before departure. Some cruise lines may allow you to view your cabin assignment online once it’s confirmed.
3. Upgrade opportunities: Occasionally, the cruise line may assign a better cabin within the category or even a higher category, especially during low occupancy or promotions.

Our Experience

We saved £600 on our balcony cabin on Allure of the Seas and got a great location on deck 6. The cabin was at the aft (back) of the ship, so nice and quiet. We were across the corridor to Playmakers restaurant, so there was some food smell in the corridor, but it wasn’t bad. I can’t stand food smells, and this one wasn’t strong enough to bother me.

Now here’s the thing: on paper, this is a location others will not choose when paying to choose, but it was fine and worth the £600 saving.

Pros and Cons of Guaranteed Cruise Cabins

Pros

• Lower cruise cabin prices: Often cheaper than selecting a specific cabin.
• Upgrade potential: Some passengers receive a better cabin for the same price. Although this is rare, it does sometimes happen.
• Early booking: You can secure a cabin while prices are lower without locking in an exact location.

Cons

• No choice of location: You may end up near lifts, public areas, or lifeboats, which can be noisy.
• Late assignment: Cabin numbers are typically confirmed only a few weeks before departure, which can be stressful for cruisers who like to plan every detail. We found out a month before our cruise, but I figured you don’t expect to know in a hotel, so I didn’t stress about it.

Tips for Booking a Guaranteed Cruise Cabin

Be flexible: If location matters (e.g., you want a quiet cabin mid-ship), guaranteed cabins may not be ideal. Check reviews: Look at deck plans and read passenger reviews to understand which areas on the ship are problematic, as you may be allocated to a cabin that others avoid.

Do not book 2 cabins and expect them to be connected or near to eachother. They may not even be on the same deck. So if you are travelling with family and want to be near each other, don’t book a guaranteed cabin.

Ask about upgrades: Contact your travel agent or cruise line to see whether upgrades are offered when booking a guaranteed cabin. Sometimes you can upgrade for a fee or watch for upgrade emails to bid for a higher category.
