We were lucky enough to be invited by The Lighthouse, Poole, to see the first show in the tour of ‘The Wellies’, a new and engaging show by The English Touring Opera Company, written by Joanna Marie Skillett & Tatty Hennessy.
Milly is bored! She’s stuck at home; it’s raining outside, and she’s played with all of her toys. She finds an amazing pair of shiny talking wellies and discovers their secret power to splash you to any time and place you desire… but where will the wellies take Milly (and the whole audience).

Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Galoshes of Fortune, The Wellies is an immersive story for ages 3-7 and audiences with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This show is fully immersive, where children and adults are invited on stage and to sing and dance along. This is a fully accessible show, in a way I haven’t seen before, through sign language, visuals (words & pictures) and wonderful song and music you are invited to come into Millys world and the actors really make it happen from the moment you walk through to door to the moment you leave.

Engage your senses and explore your imagination this Autumn and join Milly and her new welly friends as they discover magic, adventure and learn to appreciate home.
In the performance we saw were; Phoebe Smith as Milly, David Horton as Righty and Astronaut, Neil Balfour as Lefty and Chef Bon Bon with Ruth Ross on Piano and Trumpet. A small but perfectly formed cast who were all wonderful at making sure all children were fully involved and got a chance to go on stage and play if they wanted.

The Lighthouse provides an exciting year-round programme of nationally acclaimed, high quality and diverse arts and entertainment from national, international, and regional artists, providing the community with opportunities to engage in a broad range of arts activities and experiences. Primarily a receiving venue, the variety and varying sizes of the spaces enables a presentation of a broad and significant range of work from all art forms and scale.
The Lighthouse is home to Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and several arts organisations use the venue to deliver arts activities and cultural training. The Lighthouse support artists to develop their work and their is emphasis to ensure the community have opportunities to engage with and participate in the arts.
The Wellies is stated for ages 3-7 and my children Cecilia (3) and Dylan (7) both absolutely loved it as did I! I would say due to the accessible nature of this show this is wonderful for age 1-100! We really enjoyed it and would definitely look to go to The English Touring Opera shows again!
