If you are looking for a way to escape the hectic Edinburgh Fringe and take a step back from every day life, then we would highly recommend the Taiwan Season: Whale, Where Are You Going? In a magical change of pace from the bustling streets outside, this enchanting piece of theatre was a real gem, transporting the audience to a small island far, far away.
The cast welcomed us into the small theatre, recommending good seats for little ones to see. And there were lots of little ones; the combination of the puppets, the gentle music and the light and movement seemed to be appealing to the very youngest of theatre goers. The word-free show told the compelling story about the meeting of an old man bound by his routine and a disruptive young child, full of curiosity, and a little bit of mischief, and how they journey together in search of the elusive whale.
The story is told using shadow puppetry and a very expressive table top puppet who alongside a human actor takes the audience on their journey of discovery. A small group of talented puppeteers bring the small boy to life and their skill is awe inspiring. The show has an element of inactivity, which draws the audience in further and the excellent lighting and projections make full use of all the walls of the theatre making it an immersive 360 theatre experience.
As the show came to an end it was clear that this simple, yet magical show had cast a spell on the whole audience. Don’t miss this charming piece of theatre, which is on until 24 August.
