I took my two children, aged 6 and 11, to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the St Helens Theatre Royal, and although we attend the panto regularly, we were still thoroughly impressed by the exceptional performance. From start to finish, it was fantastic and kept all three of us enthralled, and the laughs were nonstop.
The laughs were coming at us hard and fast, and even my 11 year old commented on just how funny it was, which was a pleasant surprise considering I’d had to persuade him to come (apparently Snow White is ‘uncool’, an opinion that was very much changed almost instantly from the show beginning!). The comedy is top notch, very naughty at times, cleverly executed in a manner that is funny and silly for the children too young to understand the underlying naughtiness, but also offers the parents much entertainment also. I honestly don’t know which of the three of us laughed the most.

The cast is superb, with St Helens Theatre Royal regulars Lewis Devine and Richard Aucott as the comic and Dame respectively stealing the show. Pop legend Maureen Nolan stars as the wicked witch, supporting Coronation Street’s Emrhys Cooper and Chantelle Morgan as the Prince and Princess. The seven dwarves are voiced by Johnny Vegas, Louis Emerick, Craig Philips, Pete Price, John May, Joel Ross and Philip Regan with their costumes deserving their own mention with how incredible they are.

The songs are a mix of well known classics and originally written music, with a special performance from Maureen Nolan to finish. A ridiculously funny rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas is performed, which had the performing cast and crowd in stitches alike, and, in true panto style, the audience participation is continuous throughout the show. The dancers do an excellent job also, from ballet dancing to playing wolves, with an array of supporting costumes in between.
Credit is due for everyone involved, from cast and crew to writers and choreographers. I don’t know how they do it but they manage to keep improving it every time and keep it original despite doing similar 2/3 times a year.
