On Saturday evening my family and I braved Storm Darragh to head into Truro and watch Hall for Cornwall’s new pantomime – Jack and the Beanstalk.
It was a brilliant night and one my whole family really enjoyed. My kids haven’t stopped talking about it since so I highly recommend going to see this show while it’s still on.

Jack and the Beanstalk has a perfect balance of memorable characters, catchy songs, dancing, jokes, heart and humour. There was also a smattering of audience interaction which my kids loved too.

Jack lives in Kernow with his much cleverer sister Simone. Their mum Maid Trott was played by Kernow King Edward Rowe in his first ever pantomime dame role.
Life is tough for Jack – the giant has stolen all his friends and is charging him and the other villagers for rain. But together with the help of his friends, family, a sparkly fairy and a magic bean, Jack just might find a way to defeat the giant.
This pantomime also features a dancing cow called Jagga, a cuddly goose, enormous giant and a couple of baddies in the form of Dame Judi Hench and Harri Co’Vert who the audience enjoyed booing at.
The youth ensemble were also brilliant and I also have to shout out to everyone behind the scenes who contributed to the set design, costumes, hair and make-up, lighting, sound and music as those elements played such an important part in making Jack and the Beanstalk memorable too.
As well as clapping and singing a long, my kids aged eight and ten, my husband, mother-in-law and I spent a lot of the show laughing out loud as it was genuinely hilarious. The mixture of slapstick humour, local Cornish jokes and those aimed at grown-ups rather than little ones meant there was something for everyone.
There was a BSL interpreter at the show we watched and some of the other performances of this pantomime are captioned, audio described and relaxed. The Box Office are really helpful so do speak to them if you have any additional needs or requirements.
Jack and the Beanstalk was written by Stever Marmion, directed by Joyce Branagh and produced in association with Falmouth University.
The show runs for approximately 2 hours with a 20 min interval. There are ice creams, drinks and snacks available to buy before, after and during the interval from either the Playhouse Bar or the Green Room Cafe.
Jack and the Beanstalk runs until 31st December and tickets are available to buy from the Hall for Cornwall website.
The Hall for Cornwall was renovated in 2021 and is such an amazing space to see shows in. There are over 1000 seats across the three tiers in the Playhouse.
