We recently spent a few nights at the New Boar in the picturesque village of Abridge in Essex. Living in the Lancashire countryside, we are no strangers to a pretty village. But growing up in Essex, I know that similar beauty can be found not far from London, and it also has slightly warmer weather.

Review, The New Boar Abridge Essex

The New Boar is a great location for exploring Essex and getting into London, and at around £100 a night, it’s a significant saving on some of the properties in London, which makes the 1-hour train journey worthwhile. There are only a handful of rooms that are quirky and comfortable, and we were met with a warm welcome.

The New Boar also has an excellent restaurant if you want to chill, have a great meal, or enjoy a cocktail. I was concerned that there was no option to book breakfast, but this isn’t an issue as the cafe next door serves breakfast. It’s cute and welcoming, plus it serves a great breakfast. Also, check out the florist next door; you will find it hard not to make a purchase.

Our Room At The New Boar In Abridge, Essex

The rooms have been decorated and are charming, with a comfy bed and double sash windows overlooking the road running through the village. My only issue is that the windows do not open. We stayed over two sweltering days, and the room was hot. However, the staff at the pub are fabulous and put a fan in the room to ensure we could keep cool.

The room had thoughtful touches such as tea, coffee, biscuits, still and sparkling water, and these were replenished each day. There was also a hairdryer, iron and ironing board.

The Ensuite Bathroom At The New Boar

The ensuite was compact and clean but not overly modern. However, the towels were soft and clean ( I hate hard, scratchy towels). These were changed daily, and toiletries were supplied.

Food And Dining at the New Boar

Food and cocktails are a big part of staying at the New Boar. The team is excellent, so friendly, and there is nothing too much trouble. I follow a mainly gluten-free diet; there were plenty of options, and over the two nights we stayed, our meals and service were fabulous. You never had to ask for your drinks to be refilled, the menus were explained and the was delicious. There is also a cocktail menu, perfect for dessert.

On Saturday nights, the New Boar has a singer; I thought this might ruin the chilled atmosphere. However, it is quite the opposite. We enjoyed a chilled-out meal and cocktails on the patio; the singer was fantastic, and it was a wonderfully chilled evening.

Would I Recommend The New Boar

Yes, absolutely; the rooms are great value and a great base if you are visiting the area. What really shines is the team and the food. Every member of staff was excellent. They couldn’t do enough to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.
