To book – Quentin Blake’s Mrs Armitage on Wheels | Edinburgh Festival Fringe

A quirky looking garden shed and a bike dominate the stage and the air is filled with the chatter of excited little voices, as we wait for Mrs Armitage on Wheels to begin.

Mrs A is a bubbly and enthusiastic force to be reckoned with, brimming with ideas and inventions.  She is helped along the way by her fantastic dog Breakspear who is masterfully handled by the two puppeteers who make up the other members of the cast. (I hadn’t seen a dog on a scooter before, but I can promise you, it’s amazing!).

The musical explores the theme of repairing and repurposing things, and Mrs Armitage goes a step further: “don’t just fix it, make it better” she sings.  With the help of Breakspear she invents solutions for all her friends, family and neighbours, much to their grateful delight.

When invited to visit Cousin Angela, Mrs Armitage and Breakspear embark on the journey to her nearby village several times, but always end up back at home to add another enhancement or embellishment to their transport! It’s quite a journey, which doesn’t end quite how Mrs Armiatge would like.  But when things go wrong, Mrs Armitage’s community rallies round to help her.

A delightful performance with a wholesome and enduring message about the joy of creativity and invention.
