We were blown away by the Ndlovu Youth Choir, they were amazingly talented, charismatic and joyful and to top it all they have a wonderful, poignant story of how their journey began.
We’d had a very fast walk from our previous show, so we arrived at the striking Assembly Hall on The Mound a bit hot and bothered. A quick dash up the steps and we sat down to gather our breath. The show began and our breath was quickly taken away again by the powerful music of Ndlovu Youth Choir as they performed traditional African songs, popular hits, their own unique take on some well-known classics and their own original songs. It was wonderfully curated and the energy emanating from the stage was captivating.
Merle was completely enchanted by their performance and was dancing in the aisle (she wasn’t the only one). She also absolutely loved the lively and colourful costumes.
For me the story of their background which was incredibly touching and inspiring. The choir started in the rural area of Limpopo in South Africa as a community project for young people who didn’t have access to the arts. The choir grew and started performing, and through time and hard work they have found international success. They have performed in some of the most prestigious venues in the world, the group were finalists in America’s Got Talent and now they are debuting at the Fringe. What a story!
The whole experience was so uplifting, Ndlovu Youth Choir are in Edinburgh until the 30th of August – Merle and I highly recommend you go and see this awe-inspiring show.
