We all know and love the Paddington films, but there’s something truly special about hearing the heartwarming story accompanied by a live orchestra. That’s why we were so excited to head to the Liverpool Empire for “Paddington In Concert,” featuring the London Concert Orchestra performing Nick Urata’s delightful calypso-infused score.

The crowd at “Paddington In Concert” was a delightful mix. From kids with their families to seasoned couples, everyone came to share the heartwarming tale of a Peruvian bear finding his way in bustling London. On the big screen, Paddington’s adventures were brought to life by a stellar cast including Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, and even acting legends like Julie Walters and Dame Maggie Smith. (Note: Imelda Staunton is a Dame, not Julie Walters). As the lights dimmed and the anticipation grew, the London Concert Orchestra took center stage. Their stirring performance of the film’s score promised a truly unique cinematic experience.

Adding to the fun, film critic Ali Plumb, a Paddington devotee, provides a pre-recorded introduction. He returns at intermission and the film’s conclusion, keeping the audience engaged with humor and insightful commentary. An interactive quiz, accessible via an on-screen QR code, provides a delightful activity during the break. The composer’s enthusiastic announcement of the quiz winner at show’s end was another highlight.

The London Concert Orchestra truly elevated the experience. Witnessing the conductor seamlessly synchronize the orchestra with the on-screen action – from the film score to the subtlest sound effects – was awe-inspiring. As a first-timer to live-scored films, I had no idea what I was missing! With a live orchestra, Paddington’s antics became side-splittingly funny, suspenseful moments sent shivers down our spines, and joyful scenes soared with an unmatched exuberance. This wasn’t just a movie – it was live and emotional. More than just entertainment, it’s a magical way to introduce newcomers to the power and beauty of orchestral music.
