Last night I had the joy of experiencing Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Palace Theatre, Manchester, was nothing short of intoxicating theatre at its finest. From the very first moment, it was a feast of colour, sound, and spectacle, a heady mix of indulgence and magic that left me completely spellbound. I went in blind, never having seen the film or the stage show before, and I’m so thankful I did. Discovering this extraordinary production for the first time was an unforgettable thrill, the kind of experience you want to savour.

What Is Moulin Rouge! The Musical About?

Inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film, the stage musical premiered in Boston in 2018 before opening on Broadway in 2019, where it became a runaway success and scooped 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The West End production followed in 2021, with UK and international tours now bringing its “spectacular spectacular” to audiences worldwide.

Set in Paris at the dawn of a new century, the story follows Christian, an idealistic young writer who falls for Satine, the glittering star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret. Their romance unfolds against the backdrop of a struggling nightclub, where passion, ambition, and sacrifice collide. The show’s extraordinary jukebox score stitches together many pop anthems, from Elton John and Madonna to Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, in clever mashups that feel at once nostalgic and brilliantly reimagined.

My Review of Moulin Rouge! The Musical

From the moment the curtain rose, the stage erupted with energy and never let up, one breathtaking number after another. Josh Rose is pitch-perfect as the earnest Christian, with Verity Thompson radiating star power as Satine. Their chemistry is irresistible, and together they deliver both heart-stopping drama and tender, intimate moments that linger long after the final curtain.

The whole cast deserves every bit of praise too. This is a cast that pours everything into every scene, from high-kicking cancan numbers to the smouldering Argentine tango that left me holding my breath, to “Come What May,” which sent shivers down my spine. Every performance was flawless, every moment charged with emotion.

The stage design is, without doubt, the most stunning I have ever seen. It is not simply a set, but an immersive world that pulls you into the bohemian underbelly of Paris. With dazzling costumes, inventive lighting, and staging that transforms before your eyes, the creative team has crafted an experience that is as much a visual spectacle as it is musical theatre. And then there’s the soundtrack, a kaleidoscope of familiar songs transformed in ways that make you hear them anew, each one slipping seamlessly into the story as if it always belonged there.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a rollercoaster of emotions. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and even today, I can’t quite believe how powerfully it swept me away. I’m genuinely glad I knew nothing of the story beforehand, because seeing it unfold fresh was pure theatre magic, the kind of unforgettable night you’ll talk about for years to come.
