Monumental Cemetery in Milan is FREE

Yes that’s right it’s FREE. To be honest there aren’t many places you can visit in Milan that are good value for money, or cheap. There are very few that are FREE, so for that reason alone it makes it a good reason to visit the Monumental Cemetery in Milan with kids.

Experience a unique setting

The Monumental Cemetery has wide open spaces that offers a break from the hustle and bustle (and frankly chaos at times) of the city. Kids can enjoy the outdoor space while their parents explore the architectural magnificance of some of the tombs. Whilst we wouldn’t suggest that kids run around screaming, its a cemetery after all, it does offer a more relaxed space that that of an air conditioned art gallery with wardens on every corner.

If you have slightly older kids who can go off on their own. Take a look at some of the most impressive tombstones on the signs as you go in and see if the kids can find them.

Or get them to take photos of the most impressive tombs that they find and then compare notes afterwards. Here are some of the most incredible or interesting ones we saw:

Learn about History

The Monumental Cemetery is in reality a vast museum of art and architecture that showcases the history of Milan. It is an excellent place for children to learn about the city’s past, including the many historical figures buried there and the elaborate tombs and mausoleums constructed in their honour. The tombs at this Milan burial ground offer a great glimpse of Italian artistic styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Appreciate Architecture

The Monumental Cemetery is also a stunning art gallery with intricate sculptures, mosaics, and frescoes that tell stories of the lives of those who are buried there. Kids can learn about the different styles of art represented in the cemetery and appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of these works. You can see different styles change over the years all in one place.
