On our recent Royal Caribbean cruise aboard Odyssey of the Seas, during our Greek Isles itinerary (Santorini, Mykonos, Kusadasi and Naples), we chose to self-explore and make our own way to Ischia for the day. And let me tell you, it is so easy to do, plus you work to your own timetable at your own pace (I can’t bear big group tours) and considerably cheaper than booking a tour. But there are risks to going it alone, so read on for all my tips and how to avoid issues.

How to Get from Naples Cruise Port to Ischia (Step-by-Step Ferry/Hydrofoil Guide for Cruise Passengers)

The easiest way to get from Naples cruise port to Ischia is:

Walk around 10 minutes from the cruise terminal to the hydrofoil/ferry port, buy a return ferry ticket (around €40 per person), then take the 1-hour hydrofoil to Ischia Porto.

Always plan to return early and be back in Naples at least 1 hour before all-aboard time. The ship will leave without you, so plan an earlier return to give you at least an hour’s cushion for delays.

If you’re used to cruise excursions to places like Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast, Ischia feels completely different. It felt like going into another world, we visited Sorrento from Naples last year, and I fell in love with the Islands.

Walk from Naples Cruise Port to Molo Beverello Ferry Terminal

The ferry terminal is very close to the cruise port. We walked from the cruise terminal to Molo Beverello in about 10 minutes maximum. The route is flat and very easy, and most cruise passengers naturally head in the same direction.

Important tip: Go early and aim for one of the first ferries you can realistically catch. This gives you more time on the island and reduces stress later in the day. Also consider buying your tickets online from the ferry company, we had planned to go to Capri, but the tickets had sold out an hour before.

Now we are pretty chilled, so we decide to get the next ferry to an Island, there are a few! And were fortunate that Ischia was next. Now, if you do go rogue like us, check the times of the ferries; some are longer.

Buy Ferry Tickets to Ischia From The Terminal

At the ferry terminal, we bought return ferry tickets for €40 per person return. There are different ferry options, including faster hydrofoils, but the journey takes about 1 hour each way.

The ferry terminal seems chaotic, but is in fact very organised. Once you have your ticket, you will be given a port door number. When this opens, you are taken to an outside queue area where you wait until they board the ferry. It’s an easy process to follow; just be ready with payment. I paid by card, no problem.

Cruise timing tips

• Always check return ferry times before leaving Naples
• Do not assume frequent late-day sailings, as there seemed to be fewer later in the day, and you want to know there is at least one more ferry after your planned ferry to give you a buffer. But the last ferry must return before all aboard time.
• Plan to be back in Naples well ahead of all aboard time,

We personally always aim to be back at least 1 hour before ship departure. This gives us time to board and have a glass of wine before the ship sails. I need to know I will be back, or my stress levels will be sky-high. But having that hour’s cushion ensures a relaxed day.

The Ferry from Naples to Ischia (What to Expect)

The ferry journey takes around one hour. But be aware that the crossing can be rocky. If you are prone to seasickness, take a tablet before boarding. If you get the chance, sit on the left-hand side of the ferry when leaving Naples for views of Procida as you pass it. It’s a beautiful bonus to the journey.

Arriving in Ischia Porto

We arrived into Ischia Porto, the island’s main ferry hub.

The atmosphere instantly felt calmer than Naples. Think:

• Colourful waterfront buildings
• Small boats in the marina
• Relaxed Italian island energy

From here, everything is walkable and easy to explore.

What We Did in Ischia (DIY Cruise Day)

We kept the day relaxed and explored on foot. We wandered around the port and town area and found lots of small local shops selling beautiful handmade crafts. Prices felt reasonable compared to many other Mediterranean cruise ports. Ischia is brilliant for local liqueurs. While limoncello is everywhere, we also found lots of new and exciting flavours. My favourite was meloncello, which we brought home as gifts.

Lunch at the Marina in Ischia

One of the highlights of the day was lunch overlooking the harbour. There are plenty of restaurants along the marina with beautiful sea views.

We both had:

• 2 Chicken salads
• A basket of bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil
• 2 Glasses of Local Italian wine and 2 Beers

And the bill was €67.00. It was one of those meals where you could happily sit for hours watching the boats and people pass by; the weather was glorious, and the vibe was chilled.

More Things to do in Ischia and a Reason to Return

One of the joys of Ischia is simply wandering and soaking up the atmosphere.

You can:

• Visit one of Ischia’s famous thermal baths and gardens
• Visit the stunning Aragonese Castle
• Relax at one of the island’s beaches, which are walkable from the port
• Take a local bus or taxi around the island

Returning from Ischia to Naples Cruise Port

This is the most important part of the day. Ferries do not always run at convenient times later in the day, so planning is essential. Plan to be back in Naples at least 1 hour before all-aboard time. We made sure to leave Ischia early and had a smooth, stress-free return journey back to Odyssey of the Seas.

Is Ischia Worth The Trip from a Cruise Stop in Naples?

Yes, absolutely. Even on an itinerary packed with incredible destinations like Mykonos and Kusadasi, Ischia was also memorable but for different reasons, it felt:
