Ready for your next trip? Bags packed? Tickets sorted? Plenty of free storage on your iPhone? …Wait, not that last one? Whether you’re off to see the Northern Lights or lazing around in Lanzarote, the last thing you want is your phone choking on every photo or refusing to download maps.

To avoid that kind of chaos, we’ve put together a quick guide to show you how to free up storage on your iPhone before you jet off. Because let’s be honest, in travel, preparation is half the fun (and all the peace of mind).

Check What’s Using Your Storage

First things first, before you start deleting anything, you’ve got to know what’s actually taking up the space. Otherwise, it’s like throwing clothes out of your suitcase without checking what you packed.

Head to Settings, then tap General > iPhone Storage. Give it a moment, this screen can take a few seconds to load while your phone crunches the numbers.

Once it’s ready, you’ll see a colourful bar chart showing what’s hogging your storage. Apps, photos, system data, media. You can read what each of those means in this Apple guide, but we won’t dwell on it here.

Just scroll down and you’ll get a list of apps sorted by size. You might be shocked to find that a podcast app you forgot about is hoarding 3GB of old episodes, or that Messages has a stash of memes from 2018 still kicking around.

This overview helps you spot the real culprits.

5 Easy Methods to Clear Space on iPhone

Alright, now that you’ve scoped out what’s eating your storage, let’s actually do something about it. There are a few different approaches to clear storage on iPhone, and the ones below are quick, painless, and (most importantly) effective. Pick a few that make sense for you.

1. Delete Old Media You Won’t Need on Your Trip

Let’s start here, because for most people, especially if you travel a lot, photos and videos are what eat up the most space. If you peeked at the iPhone Storage screen a minute ago, there’s a good chance the Photos category was sitting right at the top. In our experience, it usually is.

Makes sense, right? Between sunsets, food pics, and that one video of your mate falling into a pool, the Camera Roll fills up fast. So before your next trip, go through it with a critical eye.

You can do it all by hand, but honestly, who’s got time for that? You’re better off spending it getting ready for the trip, not stuck swiping through five years of holiday snaps. That’s why loads of people hand the job over to apps instead.

The App Store’s full of options that’ll tidy your photo library for you, but special mention goes to the AI-powered cleaners. These aren’t just basic filters, they use proper machine learning to spot things your iPhone’s built-in tools can’t.

Take the Duplicates album, for example. It’s helpful, but it only flags exact matches. So those ten nearly identical shots of a statue you took on a tour in Florence? They won’t show up there. That’s where third-party apps shine, and they’re far better at spotting patterns and suggesting what to bin.

One of the best we’ve used is Clever Cleaner. It’s completely free, easy to use, and impressively smart at figuring out what’s actually worth keeping.

Here’s how to use it to free up space on an iPhone:

  1. Download Clever Cleaner: AI CleanUp App from the App Store.
  2. Open it up, tap on Similars, and let the app do its thing; it’ll group together all your lookalike photos.
  3. Hit Smart Cleanup, and the AI will choose the best shot to keep from each group.
  4. Happy with the picks? Swipe to delete the rest. Prefer a bit more control? Tap into any group, change the selection, or skip it altogether.
  5. When you’re ready, tap Move to Trash, then Empty Trash to properly clear them out. After every cleanup, it’ll show you how much space you’ve saved and remind you to empty the Recently Deleted album so the space actually frees up.
  6. You’ll also want to check out the Heavies tab, which sorts all your photos and videos by size, which the iPhone’s Photos app can’t do. Great for spotting those massive 4K videos you forgot about. Use the same process: select what you don’t need, delete, then empty the trash.

There’s a Screenshots tab too (for bulk clearing random screen grabs) and a Lives tab (helps you convert Live Photos to stills, saving even more space without losing the photo itself).

All in all, cleaning up your camera roll should free up loads of space for the next batch of holiday snaps. It’s one of the easiest ways to free up space on your iPhone before a trip.

2. Offload Unused Apps

Usually, right after Photos, it’s the Applications section that eats up the most space. Some of them make sense, your favourite editing app or navigation tool, but plenty are just sitting there doing nothing.

Now, we’re not here to remind you to delete apps you don’t use. You already know that. Bit obvious, isn’t it? Instead, let’s talk about something smarter: offloading.

Offloading lets you remove the app itself while keeping all your data and settings intact. It’s perfect for apps you won’t need on your trip, like your local takeaway’s loyalty app or that workout tracker you’re definitely not using on holiday.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Head to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Find an app you don’t need right now, tap it.
  3. Then hit Offload App. That’s it.

The icon will stay on your Home Screen with a little cloud next to it. And when you’re back from your trip? Just tap it. iOS will reinstall it with all your stuff exactly where you left it. No stress, no data lost, and no hunting around in the App Store.

It’s a tidy little trick that saves space without breaking anything.

3. Clear Safari Cache and History

Next up: Safari cache and history. Not the most glamorous cleanup job, but you’d be surprised how much space your browser can hog over time, especially if you do a lot of Googling or online shopping.

Every website you visit stores little bits of data on your iPhone (images, cookies, saved scripts) to help pages load faster the next time. But when you’ve got months (or years) of that piling up, it starts to slow things down and take up space you could be using for offline maps or holiday playlists. If you’re wondering how to clear space on your iPhone without deleting anything major, this is a great place for that.

To clear it out:

  1. Go to Settings > Safari.
  2. Scroll down, and tap Clear History and Website Data.
  3. Give it a second, confirm, and… it’s gone. Your tabs will stay open, but your browsing history, cookies, and cached files will be wiped.

This won’t give you gigabytes of storage back, but it’s a quick win, and if you’ve never done it before, you might see more space freed up than you’d expect. Plus, your browser gets a fresh start, which is never a bad thing before a trip.

4. Delete Large Attachments from Messages

Messages might not seem like a space hog at first glance, but if you’ve ever sent or received videos, voice notes, or memes that were a little too high-res, they’re probably sitting quietly in the background taking up room.

iMessage saves everything by default, including ancient group chats and all the media that comes with them.

Luckily, you don’t need to scroll through endless conversations to find them. Here’s a smarter way:

  1. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages.
  2. Scroll down to Photos, Videos, or Documents.
  3. From there, you can see the largest files first: tap Edit, select what you don’t need anymore, and hit Delete.

This is especially useful before a trip when every megabyte counts. You’ll probably clear out a few hundred MB in under a minute, and your phone won’t miss it.

By the way, if you’re not the sentimental type (or you’d just rather your iPhone tidy up after itself), you can auto-delete old messages and their attachments.

As covered in the official iPhone User Guide, you can set your messages to delete automatically after a certain period. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings > Messages, then scroll down to Keep Messages.
  2. You’ll see three options: 30 Days, 1 Year, or Forever.

30 Days is great if you like to keep things lean. Once set, your iPhone will quietly clear out old messages and all the space-hogging things attached to them, no extra effort.

5. Enable iCloud Photos with “Optimise iPhone Storage”

If you’re heading somewhere with decent Wi-Fi or solid mobile data, think big cities, hotels, or anywhere with a café on every corner, then this one’s a no-brainer.

iCloud Photos with Optimise iPhone Storage is a brilliant way to clear space without deleting a single photo. It works by storing full-res versions of your photos and videos in iCloud, while keeping smaller, compressed versions on your iPhone. So your library still looks the same, but it takes up way less space.

To turn it on:

  1. Go to Settings > Photos, then toggle on iCloud Photos.
  2. Make sure Optimise iPhone Storage is ticked underneath.

Now here’s the thing: this works best when you’ll have regular access to the internet. If you’re off-grid or roaming somewhere remote, you might struggle to load full-res versions on the fly. But if you’re city-hopping or staying connected, it’s the perfect solution.

One heads-up: iCloud gives you 5GB for free, which fills up fast. If you’ve got loads of media, you might need to upgrade to a paid plan, but it’s pretty cheap and a solid investment if you take a lot of photos. Ideal for travellers who want space and a full camera roll.

Final Tips Before You Head Off

Alright, before you zip up your suitcase, we wanted to throw in a few last-minute suggestions, consider it your bonus round of tips for how to get rid of storage on iPhone without overthinking it.

  • We all tend to go a bit overboard prepping for a trip. Every playlist, every episode, every offline map, loaded and ready, just in case. But let’s be honest: are you actually going to rewatch that Netflix series or get through all 42 hours of your “Road Trip Bangers” playlist? Probably not. So go into Spotify, Netflix, or whatever apps you’ve been hoarding content in, and bin the stuff you’re not going to touch. You can always re-download later when you’ve got Wi-Fi.
  • Another thing worth checking: offline maps from old trips. You know, like that Google Maps download of Normandy from 2022. If it’s not part of this trip, clear it out. Those files take up more space than you’d expect.
  • And while you’re in cleanup mode, maybe give your podcast app a scroll too. Episodes you’ve already listened to? Gone. Makes space for new ones and keeps the app running smoother.
  • If you’re really tight on space, consider off-loading files to your Mac or PC, or even an external drive. A quick plug-in, move your biggest videos and photos off the phone, and boom, more room to breathe.

Hopefully, your iPhone is feeling lighter and ready to go. With a bit of quick prep, you’ll have plenty of space for a new trip.

Safe travels, and may your next adventure be a breeze.
