One of the easiest ways to explore Key West with kids is by using the Hop-On Hop-Off Conch Tour. The guided tour lets you visit all the top attractions at your own pace, making sightseeing stress-free. For a budget-friendly option, take advantage of the free Duval Loop Bus. We used this convenient service, which runs through Old Town Key West, allowing families to explore many key attractions without the hassle of parking. The buses are regular, free to use and air-conditioned.

Plus the website has a live tracking facility on the website. We used this all day as it helped us plan what to do next. Although we did a lot of walking, we did use the free bus to get down to the Southernmost Point at midday when the sun was at its hottest.

The house is full of history, and a great place for older kids to find out about the life on Hemingway. You buy tickets on the door, these inlude a guided tour. However there is usually a wait for this and you are also able to explore independently.
• Harry S. Truman Little White House – The winter retreat of President Truman, now a historic museum.
• Mel Fisher Maritime Museum – Discover real-life treasures recovered from shipwrecks! This museum tells the exciting story of treasure hunter Mel Fisher and showcases artefacts from Spanish galleons.

Visiting the Southernmost Point Buoy in Key West with kids can be a fun and memorable experience. We got the bus down to here and the bus stops steps away.

The buoy is a large, colourful concrete marker that signifies the southernmost point of the continental United States. It’s one of the most famous photo spots in Key West, with “90 miles to Cuba” painted on its side.

Tips for Visiting with Kids

• Go Early or Late – The buoy is very popular, and long queues form during the day. Arriving early in the morning or around sunset helps avoid the crowds. If there are crowds and you don’t want to queue, you can get a photo from the right-hand side, which won’t disrupt those queuing,
• Bring Snacks & Drinks—There aren’t many shops right next to the buoy, so it’s a good idea to bring water and snacks, especially for little ones. After that, it’s only a 10-minute walk to the Southern Most Beach bar for ice cream.
• Engage Them in Fun Facts – Kids may enjoy learning that Cuba is just 90 miles away and that the marker was built to withstand hurricanes.
• Explore Nearby Attractions – After taking photos, visit the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, which is just a short walk away and great for kids. The South Beach area is also nearby if they want to paddle in the water.
• Be Prepared for the Heat – There’s no shade at the buoy, so sun cream, hats, and sunglasses are a must.

Visit South Beach 

South Beach is a small, chilled beach perfect for young kids to play on the beach. The sea is quite choppy, but it’s a great spot. There is also an abundance of snacks and ice cream at the Southern Most Beach Cafe. We stopped for a couple of drinks and snacks, and it’s such a chilled place; we loved it.

Spend Time At Mallory Square 

Visit in the evening for the legendary Sunset Celebration, featuring street performers, food stalls, and a fun atmosphere the whole family will enjoy. However, if you go during the day, you can also spot a cruise ship docked in port. However, only one cruise ship is allowed to dock at Key West a day, and they must leave by sunset.

Apart from the Shipwreck Museum and Aquarium, you will find lots of shops selling souvenirs and Mallory Square Market. Visit the Shell Shop and visit one of Key West’s famous shell shops to browse an incredible selection of seashells, sponges, and ocean-inspired souvenirs. Kids will love meeting the legendary Sponge Man, and you will love all the gorgous homeware and Christmas decorations. I wanted to buy it all. But settled for shell and sea pebble Christmas decorations.
