If you’re looking for a destination that blends culture, nature, and family fun, Chiang Mai is a wonderful choice. This peaceful city in northern Thailand is full of warmth, colour, and adventure. From elephants and temples to waterfalls and craft villages, it has everything you need for a holiday that keeps both children and parents happy!

Start Slowly and Settle In

When you arrive, take a little time to unwind before heading out. The warm temperatures and long-haul flight will leave everyone a little tired, so we suggest starting your first day with something relaxing.

Afterwards, Buak Hard Public Park in Chiang Mai’s Old City is a lovely place to start your first morning. There are plenty of shady trees, some ponds filled with fish and other critters, and a charming playground for children to run around in. Parents can enjoy a fruit smoothie or coffee from nearby stalls, possibly close to the playground, while children play.

If your accommodation has a pool, take a dip in the afternoon and let the day carry on at a leisurely pace; the slower pace of life in Chiang Mai is great for families to settle in.

Explore Temples and Culture

Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, is renowned for its temples; these are called “wats” in the local language, from the Sanskrit “Vata”. You don’t have to visit a ton of wats if you’re with family; just two or three are enough to get a sense of their beauty and serenity.

Wat Chedi Luang, located in the city centre, is impressive and has plenty of space, while nearby Wat Phra Singh is smaller, but with beautiful details, including peaceful courtyards and gorgeous golden adornments.

If your family is up for a little adventure during their stay in Chiang Mai, I highly recommend visiting the “golden temple” Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. If you can only visit one temple during your stay, this is the one!

It’s located on a hill overlooking the city. The views from the hill and the longer climb or cable car provide a bit of excitement during the outing (perfect for tiring our children out a little!). It’s best to go early or head back in the late afternoon before closing when it’s cooler and quieter.

Nature and Animal Encounters

A trip to an ethical elephant sanctuary is one of the most memorable things families can do in Chiang Mai. These centres care for rescued elephants and offer visitors the chance to feed, walk beside, and learn about them. It is gentle, educational, and unforgettable.

Another outdoor favourite is the Bua Tong “Sticky” Waterfall, about an hour north of the city. The textured rocks make it easy to climb the cascades without slipping. Bring snacks, towels, and water for a fun day out. For something closer to town, visit Ginger Farm, where children can meet farm animals, plant rice, and try simple crafts.

Creative Days and Market Evenings

Chiang Mai’s creative side makes it ideal for families who enjoy hands-on fun. The Art in Paradise 3D Museum is filled with giant murals where children can pose for playful photos, while the Elephant PooPooPaper Park adds a quirky twist, showing how elephant waste is turned into handmade paper.

At Bo Sang Umbrella Village, children can paint colourful parasols with local artists and learn how they are made. These gentle, creative activities are perfect for the warmer hours of the day and give families a relaxed break between sightseeing and outdoor adventures.

In the evening, visit the Sunday Walking Street Market or the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. Both are lively, friendly, and full of local flavour. Children enjoy choosing small souvenirs or tasting something new, while parents can relax and enjoy the easygoing atmosphere.

Tips for Parents

To keep your trip relaxed and enjoyable, a few simple habits can make all the difference.

  • Start early, rest midday. The heat builds after lunchtime, so plan main activities for the morning.
  • Stay hydrated. Carry water and light snacks for temple and market days.
  • Book early. Elephant sanctuaries and workshops often fill up quickly.
  • Check the air quality. Between February and April, smoke from nearby farming can cause haze. Choose indoor activities on those days.
  • Use Grab. This local ride-share app is reliable and convenient for families.
  • Balance your schedule. Alternate active days with relaxing ones to avoid overtiredness.

Bonus tip: On rest days, it helps to keep things simple. Families typically stay in, catch up on sleep, or let the children unwind with something familiar. If you’re struggling to stream your children’s usual favourites while in Thailand, I recommend getting a VPN and connecting to one of Surfshark’s servers to be able to stream as you usually would in the UK.

Finding a Family Rhythm

The key to enjoying Chiang Mai with children is balance. Combine culture, nature, and play: one day for temples and parks, the next for elephants or waterfalls, and another for markets or art. Always leave time for rest and spontaneous adventures.

Families who enjoy short trips will find much to explore around Chiang Mai. From the waterfalls and trails of Doi Inthanon National Park to the slides of the Grand Canyon Water Park, there’s something for every age. For a quieter day, Mae Sa Waterfall provides cool shade and shallow pools. Staying flexible keeps the trip fun and stress-free!

Final Thoughts

Chiang Mai’s calm pace, friendly people, and gentle food make it feel like home. Children remember the waterfalls and crafts; parents remember the quiet mornings. With a bit of planning, it’s a place the whole family can truly enjoy.

  1. This is such a beautifully written and genuinely helpful guide You’ve captured the calm, family-friendly rhythm of Chiang Mai perfectly, and I love how practical your tips are without feeling overwhelming. The balance between culture, nature, and downtime is spot on for travelling with children, and the way you highlight ethical experiences (like elephant sanctuaries and hands-on crafts) makes it even more valuable for families planning a thoughtful trip.
