We were recently asked as a family to try out our local Total Fitness as they have launched an introductory 12 days for £12 offer.  I’m already a member of a local gym so I wasn’t sure what Total Fitness could offer me, that it couldn’t.  I was wrong.

What Total Fitness can offer me (at their Prenton site) that my current gym can’t, is gym classes that are timetabled at the same time as children’s classes 7 days a week.

As you can see from the timetable below all the children’s classes that have a little clock next to them have a corresponding class for adults.  These are varied from spin, to aerobics to circuits.  It sounded too good to be true.  This could mean that I didn’t have to find child free time to exercise, they could come along too.  It could be something we could do together.

So one evening after collecting the kids from school we drove over to the Prenton Total Fitness so they could try out the Kids Track class.  I actually didn’t take up the opportunity to do a class at the same time that evening as I had already been to a spin class that morning, and my other excuse was that I wanted to see what the kids go up to.

I’m glad I took the time to watch as it was lovely to chat to a few of the kids that attend the sessions regularly too.  One little boy explained that he asked his parents to go to the gym so he could go to his favourite classes.  Another was happy to help organise the activities as she didn’t fancy running that night but still wanted to be involved with the rest of the class.

The whole atmosphere of the interaction between the kids in the group and the staff who ran the class was really lovely to see.  The staff threw themselves wholeheartedly into the session and knew most if not all of the kids by name.  They laughed a lot and put everyone at ease.

It also isn’t only activity classes that they focus on at Prenton. They are very much approaching the membership like a leisure club. They had just had a Teen Triathlon the weekend before with 200 meter Swim, Bike 6 kilometers Run 2.4 kilometers.  One of the girls in the class that evening had won and she was receiving a lot of praise from the rest of the class, it was a very collegiate atmosphere.

The following weekend was going to be a Drive in Movie and the Christmas Party had just been advertised too.

I was genuinely very impressed.

I’ve rung a few times during my membership to book classes in for the kids and have always managed to.  The pool has never seemed over busy (although we didn’t actually get round to using it) anywhere with a jacuzzi and steam room is worth spending time at!

I was hoping to finish our membership time at the gym with another track session for the kids as I could see how much they loved it (below), however we ran out of time!

I was very impressed by the offering at Prenton Total Fitness and definitely think that combing kids classes with adult classes is a superb idea. It may very well tempt me back! Perhaps in the New Year!

  1. Such a simple but brilliant idea – to offer child and adult classes at the same time. Do you know whether they offer this at other branches and what age the classes are for? I could see us 5 getting involved with a gym like this as my husband and I have struggled to fit in exercise in the last 6 years since the kids arrived!
