Tips For Planning A Family Trip To Japan

A few things we learned planning our own trip, all built into the planner:

• Book restaurants early. Many Tokyo and Kyoto restaurants take reservations months ahead. If you can’t commit that early, Last Minute Japan is useful for late availability.
• Reserve Shinkansen seats in advance, especially if you’re travelling with a lot of luggage.
• Build in slack. Rigid, minute-by-minute itineraries rarely survive contact with queues and rain.
• Have a wet-weather backup for each stop, we lost a planned day in Hakone to rain and were glad of our onsen backup plan.
