As we arrived the sounds of the 80s blare out of the speakers, I glanced around the audience, there was a wide spectrum of ages, but the average was definitely a lot older than Jonah (15), who had accompanied me.  Hmmm had I brought him to the wrong show?  As a massive music enthusiast (Prince, Queen, ABBA) and a big fan of all sorts of pop and rock, I thought this would be a perfect choice for Jonah – let’s see…

Tammy introduces the show with an impromptu aerobics class, which certainly lifts the mood of the room and loosens the audience up (perhaps a top tip for all Fringe acts!).  Then the story begins: Tammy is a 48 year old in the grips of perimenopause and is currently dealing with a mountain of momentous life changing situations.  She is packing up her house with the help of her moody 15 year old, who is obsessed with music and glued to her phone.  I feel a bit seen and wonder if Jonah does too.  Maybe this is exactly the show for us.

The show takes Tammy back in time to meet her younger self, who reminds her of her passion for music and her love of dance. The entire story is accompanied by a brilliant soundtrack, performed by an amazing 5-piece band (looking awesome in their 80s garb).  The talented lead singer delivers powerful 80s classics (think Madonna and Cindy Lauper), while the cast undertake high energy dancing accompanied by neon clad backing dancers.  All Fired Up isn’t just about the music though, there are moments that are really touching, as well as a good dose of laugh out loud nostalgia.

All Fired Up is vibrant, joyful and fun-filled, but also a moving reminder to embrace the teenager we were and have some fun 4.5 stars
