Ness Botanic Gardens in Neston, Cheshire, is home to Alfie the Elf’s Christmas Rescue from 30th November until 15th December. It is a one man show (plus a helpful tech guy) which follows the story of a cheeky elf who gets stranded in Lucy’s house. In a bid to get rescued he calls the North Pole only to find a rescue mission is not as straight forward as he had hoped and instead he has to take a long hard look at himself and make a few changes, but will it be enough for him to return to the North Pole in time for Christmas?

We had the absolute please of watching this show during opening weekend and it really was lovely. As a adult I was simply amazed by ‘Alfie’ and how incredible he was at keeping the audience entertained by himself for 45 minutes without forgetting a single line, song or joke. He even managed to go off script a time or two to interact with the children’s comments and then seamlessly return to the lines at hand. Very impressive!

As far as the kids review goes we took two with us, the youngest was 5 and the eldest 12. This is definitely a show aimed more at the under 8’s although our eldest did still laugh along. Our 5 year old, however, loved every second of it. She was fixated on Alfie from the moment he appeared and couldn’t take her eyes off him. She joined in when participation was asked for (and sometimes when it wasn’t!) and her face was full of smiles and laughter the whole way through. It really was a lovely show and one I would highly recommend for anyone with young children.

As the show is taking place at Ness Botanic Gardens your tickets also include entry to the garden which is an extra attraction in itself and definitely worth visiting. We were very lucky with the weather on our trip as although it was a bit cold it was dry and clear so we were able to explore lots of the gardens. If you haven’t been before then there is lots too see including both inside and outside areas, water gardens, a wicker tunnel and a play park. On top of this Ness Botanic Gardens have also organised a lovely little reindeer hunt to add some extra festive fun to your visit and best of all this is free.
