Scenic Flight in Namibia with Kids

Scenic Flight in Namibia

What an incredible scenic flight in Namibia with kids we had with Sossusfly organised for us by Original Travel (who specialise in all types of tailor made holidays and experiences). This scenic flight was up there with the amazing things we did in Namibia with Kids during our 14 night holiday over Christmas 2022.

The scenic flight we chose to do was the Conception Bay Flight which was around 1hr 30 minutes including the safety information. It was a perfect amount of time.

We were collected from our Guest House is Swakupmond, Cornerhouse Guesthouse and driven the short 10 minutes to the airport on the outskirts of Swakupmond.

No security, just a safety briefing and some water handed out for the flight.

The flight took off from Swakupmond and the whole thing was exciting from simply getting into the aircraft and choosing our seats, to being handed our earplugs as its noisy in the sky, to being told sort of what to expect.

Our pilot Lian expertly flew us over the dunes and the sea, down over Sandwich Harbour and onto Shawnee shipwreck. The views were incredible and not adequately demonstrated by the phone snaps! Eve sat next to Lian and he kindly referred to her as his co-pilot; she loved the role!

The “Conception Bay” Flight itself is around 360km’s over the Nambian coast.

The conception bay scenic flight takes you from Swakopmund, east via the “Moon Landscape” and along the Swakop riverbed to the Swakop and Kahn rivers intersections, crossing the Oasis Goanikontes. Over the “sea” of shifting sand dunes they reach the coast at Conception Bay passing colonies of Cape Fur seals, the wreck of the passenger liner “Eduard Bohlen” stranded in 1909. Further along the coast another shipwreck, the “Shaunee” stranded in 1976. Along the coast with the Atlantic surf on the one side and the “long wall” (Namib Dunes) on the other, you get to reach Sandwich Harbour, a wetland of international importance and protected by the Ramsar Convention.

The other fabulous thing about this trip was that the day before we had done a 4×4 drive in the dunes and gone as far as Sandwich Harbour. That was another incredible day and to head back over the dunes in a light aircraft and see exactly where we had been the day before and what we had been driving up and down was incredibly exciting.

We’d highly recommend a scenic flight in Namibia with Kids if you get the chance to visit, and do check out all the other exciting suggestions Original Travel will have about a trip to Namibia with Kids.
