Stepping into Manchester’s Opera House for Single White Female, you could feel the buzz of anticipation in the air. The lights dimmed, and an almost tangible tension settled over the audience, a sense that we were about to witness something dark, thrilling, and completely unpredictable. From the first moments on stage, it was clear this wasn’t going to be an ordinary night at the theatre. The show set the perfect stage for a story of obsession, deception, and suspense.

What is Single White Female About?

Single White Female brings a modern twist to the classic psychological thriller. The stage production features standout performances from Kym Marsh as Hedy and Lisa Faulkner as Allie, with a script penned by broadcaster and author Rebecca Reid. The story follows recently divorced Allie, whose seemingly perfect lodger, Hedy, slowly crosses the line from friend to obsession, though her motives are far from what they appear.

When the original movie hit screens, it was shocking, a thriller that rattled audiences long before social media and smartphones dominated our lives. And yet the film’s portrayal of manipulation and danger still sent shockwaves. Fast forward to today, life may be very different, and we are perhaps less naive, but one thing remains: some people are capable of terrifying, even unhinged behaviour.

My Review of Single White Female

This stage version diverges from the original movie in several ways, and it works brilliantly. By blending the cult classic with the realities of modern life, the production creates a tense, chilling, yet oddly relatable portrayal of “living with the enemy.”

Rebecca Reid’s writing allows the audience to glimpse Hedy’s backstory, offering a hint of sympathy while simultaneously emphasising the lengths she will go to achieve her obsession. Allie, the trusting host, is perfectly deceived, as Hedy infiltrates her home and manipulates those around her, from daughter Bella (played superbly by Amy Snudden) to ex-husband Sam (Jonny McGarrity). Only Allie’s best friend Graham (Andro) sees through the deception, adding another layer of tension, as Hedy is well aware of his suspicions.

The result is a production that is dark, gripping, and utterly compelling. There were moments when the silence in the theatre was almost deafening, the tension so thick it held everyone on the edge of their seats. If you enjoy suspense, this play will keep you hooked from start to finish.
