Last night my youngest son, age 11, and I were invited to the Liverpool Empire to see Peter Pan Goes Wrong! I will be honest and say I thought he’d enjoy this more than me, I was expecting to find it mildly amusing … I was wrong! It’s actually very funny and although the age recommendation was 8 plus (suggesting it’s aimed at Children) there were a lot of adults in the audience (although that might be because it was a school night!).
Peter Pan Goes Wrong is the Perfect Preparation for Panto Season!
The evening started with various members of the cast coming out into the audience and getting them to help with cables to get the lights working on the stage and generally having a joke with them. I will also say we did have a pause about half an hour into our show … which we genuinely didn’t know whether was part of the show or not! Please let us know if it happens in your performance too!

Onto the performance … I’m assuming I don’t need to tell you the story of Peter Pan … this is basically a cash strapped theatre company putting on a production of it. The cast is brilliant with only four playing one character, the other seven playing multiple – in most cases to comic effect! As you would expect there is a lot of ‘slapstick’ comedy, some is a little predictable, but still very funny. As a theatre troupe they are disastrously inept but well-meaning, they battle technical hitches, deal with flying mishaps and various cast disputes.
I asked my son what he thought he responded with “I laughed a lot – Nanny was very funny”. And whilst there are plenty of giggles for the younger ones, don’t be fooled into thinking this is aimed at them. There was plenty of humour for the adults too (some which my son wanted explaining just so he could join in with the laughter!). My only slight criticism is that I felt a couple of the scenes were dragged out a little too long, but that’s me being really picky!
Credit also needs to be given to the set designers – my son was amazed at how quickly the scene changed and really changed the feel of the play – however I’m not sure they used the best tool for the job 😉.
In conclusion I would highly recommend it to children and adults alike. I will be honest and say I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting to! It really is the perfect preparation to get you in the mood for Panto season! ‘Oh no it isn’t’ … ‘Oh yes it is’!
We were given tickets complimentary in return for an honest review. The show is on at The Empire Theatre, Liverpool until Saturday 21st October, with a matinee performance on Saturday.
Age recommendation is 8 and above. The running time is 2 hours and 10 minutes including the interval.
