Last night, I was transported straight back to the 1980s for an evening of nostalgia, music, and laughter, with Now That’s What I Call A Musical. Playing at the Opera House Manchester. It’s impossible to deny that the ’80s were the golden age of pop excess. But more than that, they were my era.

The production delivered an almost authentic glimpse into what it was like to be part of the class of 1989. And for me, that wasn’t just a storyline, I was that teen in the class of ’89. It was an explosion of pop culture and fashion and the exhilarating sense that, as a young woman, I could be whoever I wanted to be.

But also That’s What I Call A Musical dares to rewrite history, offering a more diverse, inclusive look at the era. While staying true to the spirit of the ‘80s, it also reminds us how far we’ve come, with moments that left the audience audibly gasping in realisation.

What is Now That’s What I Call A Musical About?

Now That’s What I Call A Musical is a joyous yet unexpectedly gritty musical that brings the biggest hits of the 1980s to life. Featuring songs from legendary artists like Blondie, Cindi Lauper, Tears For Fears, Annie Lennox, Toni Basil, and Spandau Ballet, it delivers a nostalgic, high-energy, and thought-provoking experience. Directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, with a sharp script by award-winning comedian Pippa Evans, the show offers more than just feel-good pop, it tells a story with real depth.

Set at a school reunion for the class of 1989, the plot follows Gemma (Nina Wadia), who eagerly awaits the arrival of her best friend, April (Sam Bailey), now living in LA. But reunions aren’t just about reminiscing, they’re also about reflecting. Did life turn out the way they had hoped? Was the future they imagined in the ’80s the reality they live today?

Adding to the excitement, throughout the tour, audiences are treated to guest appearances from ‘80s pop legends, including Sinitta, Sonia, T’Pau’s Carol Decker, and Toyah Willcox, performing some of their most iconic hits: So Macho, Better The Devil You Know, China In Your Hand, and I Want To Be Free!

My Verdict: A Nostalgic Yet Thought-Provoking Journey

Now That’s What I Call A Musical transported me back to my teenage years in the best way possible. But don’t be fooled; this isn’t just another fluffy ‘80s tribute. Beneath the neon and nostalgia lies a story with substance. It explores a young girl’s dreams and aspirations, prompting the audience to ask: Did we make the right choices? Did life turn out the way we expected?

Half musical, half play, it strikes a balance between feel-good entertainment and poignant storytelling. The music is fantastic, but what truly sets this show apart is its attention to detail. It doesn’t just revive the era; it makes you relive it, capturing the small, forgotten moments of youth that adulthood often erases.

The performances are outstanding. Nina Wadia is phenomenal, perfectly matched by Sam Bailey, whose powerhouse vocals are a highlight of the show. The dynamic between their younger counterparts, Nikita Johal (Young Gemma) and Maia Hawkins (Young April), is seamless, adding another layer of depth to the storytelling.

The entire cast is superb, with impeccable vocals, strong acting, and a cleverly designed set that captures the contrast of the ‘80s.

Would I recommend Now That’s What I Call A Musical? Absolutely. It’s a nostalgic journey and whether you lived through the decade or simply love its music, this show is a must-see.
