Mind Mangler Review

Mind Mangler

Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer, creators of the global smash hit The Play that Goes Wrong and the BBC’s The Goes Wrong Show, star in Mischief’s riotous new comedy Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle in the West End.

Not much information is given away before the show (and that’s why this review is deliberately limited in detail), so my husband and I went into it with little expectation. A night out in London, whatever the occasion, is generally always welcome when you have small children being looked after by the in-laws.

The Apollo is always a joy of a theatre to watch a show with its ornate, beautiful balconies, ceiling and stage. The juxtaposition of the beautifully restored, vintage setting and such a modern show is quite extraordinary and adds to the jollity.

You are aware that this is going to include audience participation from the moment you walk to your seat and that usually doesn’t fill me with joy however in the magicians way it is done with an element of grace.

The show is well written comedy, elements of slapstick with some good magic. Getting to know the characters is also quite emotive.

You need to take the show as it is, with a sense of lightheartedness and silliness. This is not written to be the best show ever but more a jovial take on the mixed world of comedy and magic and how seriously magicians take themselves. It’s hilarious at points, fun and interactive and unlike other shows is relatively short and snappy.

There were some children in the audience and the age restriction is stated as 10+ and due to themes and language. I wouldn’t consider this appropriate for under 15s personally.

All in all this was a great night out and a fresh take on the concept of mixed shows. We very much enjoyed it and it seemed most of the rest of the audience did too.

Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle is on at the Apollo Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue from Thursday 14 March to Sunday 28 April 2024. You can buy tickets here.
