If you’re looking for a summer holiday treat that’s so fetch, then Mean Girls The Musical at the Opera House, Blackpool Winter Gardens should be right at the top of your list.
I attended last night with two very excited 13-year-olds who are huge fans of the original film and couldn’t wait to see how it translated to the stage. Thankfully, this West End smash hit, currently touring direct from London, more than delivered. From the moment the curtain went up, we were completely drawn into the world of North Shore High, the Plastics and all the drama, laughs and catchy songs that have made Mean Girls such a cultural phenomenon.

The production stars TV personality, actor and Steps star Faye Tozer, alongside Emily Lane as Cady (Frozen, Starter for Ten) and Vivian Panka as Regina (Dear Evan Hansen, Heathers). Together, they lead a tremendously talented cast who bring Tina Fey’s beloved characters to life with energy, humour and plenty of heart.

For fans of the film, all the iconic moments are there, but the musical adds something extra through its fantastic score, impressive choreography and clever sets. The audience was laughing and clapping, and the younger members of our party loved seeing familiar scenes recreated on stage, while also enjoying the show’s modern feel and spectacular production values.
The cast’s vocals were exceptional, and the choreography was sharp and really high energy. The set design cleverly transported us between classrooms, bedrooms and social battlegrounds with ease, keeping the pace moving effortlessly throughout.
What really stood out was how well the show appeals across generations. My teenagers were completely engrossed from start to finish, whilst I enjoyed the witty writing and outstanding performances. Much like the Plastics themselves, this production is impossible to ignore, although thankfully it’s a lot kinder and far more welcoming!
The Opera House at Blackpool Winter Gardens provides the perfect setting for a production of this scale and it’s wonderful to see them host another high-quality touring musical, continuing to bring the West End to the North West.
Whether you’re a long-time fan of the film, introducing your kids to live theatre, or simply someone who enjoys a brilliantly produced musical, Mean Girls The Musical is an easy recommendation. Funny, uplifting, packed with memorable songs and performed to an exceptionally high standard, it’s a show that leaves you smiling long after the final bow.
