There’s something almost cheeky about how Matilda the Musical at the Cambridge Theatre manages to feel both big and cosy all at once—like your granny’s front room if it suddenly decided to burst into song and throw a child by the hair. The theatre itself might not be the grandest in the West End, but you’d never know it once the lights go down. Through sheer cleverness of staging, the space stretches and shifts, pulling you right into the story until you’re practically part of the mischief. And when Amanda Thripp takes her now-famous spin by the pigtails, you could swear the whole place collectively gasps and leans back out of sheer instinct.

The set design deserves a standing ovation all on its own. It’s inventive, playful, and constantly surprising—full of hidden nooks and visual tricks that keep your eyes darting about like you’re trying to spot where the next bit of magic’s going to pop up. It’s so absorbing, in fact, that we barely noticed time ticking along. Before we knew it, we’d sailed through the pre-show and interval without the usual clock-watching—a sure sign you’re in for something special.

The cast are phenomenal across the board. The child performers are brimming with talent and enthusiasm, polished without losing that spark, and they blend beautifully with the adult cast. There’s no hint of “school play” energy here—this is the real deal. And at the centre of it all is Matilda herself, who delivers a performance well beyond her years. She captures that beautiful balance of vulnerability and quiet courage, and her voice? Absolutely stunning. There were definitely a few moments that had the grown-ups feeling a wee lump in the throat.

For families looking for a West End treat, this is a joyful, high-energy show that really does have something for everyone. Officially recommended for ages 6+, we’d happily say a confident 5-year-old would also be absolutely fine. In fact, we’re already planning a return visit so our youngest can enjoy it too—it’s very much one of those shows you don’t mind seeing twice.

The pacing works brilliantly for family audiences too. With a slightly earlier 7pm start, we were out before 10pm, which makes a huge difference when you’ve got kids in tow. You still get the full West End experience without it turning into a late-night endurance test. The Cambridge Theatre’s Leicester Square location is also a big win for visitors—being so close to central rail stations meant we were able to hop on a late train home without any stress.

Now, let’s have a quick word about refreshments—because it’s always part of the experience. Drinks were on the pricier side, with a cola coming in at around £5. And if your little ones spot the brightly coloured slushies (as ours inevitably did), you’re looking at around £10 for one in a souvenir cup. While it’s a lovely keepsake, it would have been nice to have a cheaper option for families who just wanted the drink without the added extra.

That said, ticket prices themselves are fairly reasonable when compared to other London shows, so it does balance out overall.

One of the most special aspects of our visit was the timing. The tickets were kindly gifted in exchange for a review, but it just so happened to coincide perfectly with our son’s tenth birthday. As parents of a child with AuDHD, theatre trips can sometimes feel like a bit of a gamble due to crowds and noise—but this experience couldn’t have gone better. He was completely engrossed, comfortable, and most importantly, he had a fantastic time. Moments like that are truly priceless.
