The sun is shining as we make the short journey from the city centre of Edinburgh to the back of the Museum. The streets were swarming with people and there is a buzz in the air that feels quite unique to Edinburgh in August. My youngest daughter Merle (aged 7 ) and I are off to attend our first show for this year’s Edinburgh Festival and we are filled with anticipation.
Mark Thompson’s Spectacular Science Show was packed-full of exciting experiments and explosions which was the perfect show for us to attend. Mark is a charismatic science enthusiast who manages to find the perfect balance between everyone’s favourite teacher and a children’s entertainer. He even manages to sneak a few conspiratorial comments and the odd joke for parents too.
The show featured a brilliant range of experiments – including lots of fire starting, a few pops and bangs, a dustbin and some loo roll. Mark includes the audience in his experiments, talking them through the process and predicting outcomes. He also gently warns of any big noises coming up, which is appreciated by parents! A few volunteers take to the stage to help out and have their moment of fame, Mark has a laugh with them and it adds to the interactivity of the show.
The following day Merle was quizzing Granny “Did you know blue flames are hotter than red ones?” Granny was impressed and I’m sure Mark will be delighted to know that Merle is championing his campaign to swap the colour of taps – red for cold and blue for hot.
Kids shows in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe should be; funny, interesting, make you think or create a bit of magic, Mark Thompson’s Spectacular Science Show ticks all the boxes – if you know a young person who’s interested in science, then this show is a must.
