SUP’s or Stand Up Paddleboards seem to be the new must have piece of kit. Families are now taking to the water in droves. We have three paddleboards now so here is a round up of Kids’ Paddleboard Reviews.
1. Portofino 10ft Inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard
This is easy to pump up and takes about 6-7 minutes, then just as easy to deflate. Stability is key when choosing a SUP and the Portofino is 33” which is a good 3” wider than other 10ft SUPs, which can help to improve its buoyancy and reduce the wobbling. This paddleboard is great for kids, they can stand on it and manoeuvre it around once in the water, it also has an adjustable light paddle so that makes it easier. It includes everything you need as it comes with a pump with pressure gauge (15 PSI), a telescopic aluminium oar (167-210 cm), a removable fin, a travel bag with easy-load front, a coil leash and repair patches. It weighs 7.8kg and also has backpack straps. At the price of £299, it is not the cheapest choice but not the dearest- so good to start with. You can buy it here. For a more in depth review, we have an article dedicated to this paddleboard here.
2. EZ Shopper Stand Up Paddle Board
Perfectly proportioned, with a 4.7” thickness, 9” length and 32” width, this choice is the optimum size for adults and children up to 60kg user weight. This paddle board has been designed for kids and like the Portofino, is a complete starter set, including a pump with pressure gauge (15 PSI), telescopic oar, removable fin, travel bag with leash and repair kit. The kit can be carried like a backpack and is 7kg. There is also an action cam / GoPro mounting point and kayak seat attachment point fitted as standard and the EZ shopper can even be easily converted into a sit-down kayak using the kayak conversion kit (sold separately) which includes a seat with backrest, footrest, and paddle blade extension, so you don’t need to choose! If you are looking for one for your kids to start with, I’d say this is a really good bet, although do be aware of the 60kg upper weight limit. The EZ Shopper is currently on offer for £199 and you can purchase it here. Click here for our full article reviewing the EZ Shopper.
3. Sandbanks SUP Style Paddle Board
As a small UK-based family business, Sandbanks Style was created in 2014 with the aim to fill the gap in the market between expensive good quality boards and cheap inflatables. Their Ultimate Board is available in two different colours and then there is a smaller Splash board designed specifically for younger paddlers. The Ultimate board is 10’6” long and 32” wide so great for all round use. The Splash is only 8’6” but still 32” wide, which makes it really stable in the water and great for young beginner paddle boarders. Each board comes with a paddle, a two stage pump, one ankle leash, valve repair kit and wheeled rucksack to pack everything in. When packed the bag measures 90cm long, 30cm deep and 40cm wide. There is a comfortable and grippy diamond groove deck pad and a raised kick-step for step back turns for the more advanced paddler. The boards are also shaped to ensure they glide through the water and ride over waves more easily. You can purchase the boards here.
4. Inflatable Stand Up Red Paddle Co Ride 10”6 and 10”8
The materials used in the Red Paddle Boards are super high quality and the technology that makes the boards so rigid is really impressive. The boards feel incredibly robust and capable of taking on waves, rocks, children and pets, they are also wide enough to give novice paddle boarders stability while maintaining manoeuvrability for those who have more experience. The Red Paddle Board Co Ride 10’6” can take a rider weight of up to 100kg and its board weight is 9.9 kg. The price of this Red Paddle Board is dearer than those previously mentioned at £869 but this is for a package including: all terrain backpack, titan pump, repair kit, water resistant phone case, a three piece paddle and a coiled leash. The Red Paddle Co Ride 10’8” is billed as being ‘better for bigger riders and great for taking passengers’ and you might find you’re more happy riding the 10’8” with kids onboard as it can be easier to keep control when they move around. With a rider weight of up to 120kg and a board weight of 10.5 kg this one is priced at £919 for the package. They can be bought here.
