Tonight I took my three girls to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Liverpool Empire which is part of the UK Tour.
I was super excited as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was one of the first musicals I ever watched twice. I loved watching Jason Donovan as Joseph and I know all the words to the songs. It was going to be difficult for me to not enjoy the show.
My three girls, 11,10, 10 on the other hand hadn’t heard any of the songs and had queried why we were going to watch a bible show on a Tuesday night….
What is the story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat?
For those unaware of the plot, the musical follows the biblical story of Joseph, who is envied by his brothers for being his father’s favourite and a strong dreamer. After his brothers sell him to slavers, and he spends time in jail, he receives the admiration of Egypt’s Pharaoh, and his technicolour dreamcoat turns to gold.
It is – as my daughter pointed out – a biblical show on stage on a Tuesday night!
Have there been any changes to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat?
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been on stage now for 50 years. It’s a big production, with a live orchestra, big costumes and fabulous songs. It’s a classic for a reason.
The UK tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is brand-new updated London Palladium production, with some of the same incredible cast, such as Jason Donovan as the Pharaoh, and Jac Yarrow in his Olivier award-nominated performance of Joseph. Alexandra Burke did continue her role of the Narrator for some of the UK tour but has since left the role in the capable hands of Linzi Hateley (as she takes some time out to have her baby).
As a Donovan fan, and someone who had seen Donovan play Joseph in the musical’s first West End revival, it was fantastic to see him take on the role of Pharaoh. I obviously wasn’t on my own with this admiration as he almost received a standing ovation when he came on stage for his first performance after the interval.
So what did we all think of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat?
I completely LOVED it. I was absorbed by the nostalgia of it, I sang along in my head, and I loved all the costumes and the enthusiasm of the cast. I came out with a big smile on my face and played the soundtrack all the way home.
Lily age 11, my new musicals partner, also really enjoyed it. She was toe tapping throughout and singing along in the car on the way home. She was also really really impressed with the young children, many of whom had fantastic stage presence.
The twins on the other hand seemed to struggle with it a little. In comparison to some of the newer musicals the storyline is perhaps a little less clear. Some of the group numbers made the story harder to follow, which obviously isn’t an issue for those of us who know it so well, but did slightly effect their enjoyment of it.
What we all loved though was the costumes, the incredible set and the fun of it all. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a musical that stands the test of time so just take your seats and wait for the spectacular to begin.
