Grease, The Musical, is currently on at the Blackpool Winter Gardens and my 11 year old twins and I went along this evening. We are all big fans of the music and the movie, and love musical theatre both on and off the stage, so we were looking forward to a great night. We were kindly gifted the tickets, but all the views are our own, so what did we think?
The short answer is we all loved it and were singing away all the way home!

Grease, The Musical is packed with energy, brilliant dancing (choreographed by Arlene Philips) and really powerful singing. The sets are simple but work very well and the costumes are exactly as you want them to be – very tight jeans and leather jackets for the boys and 50’s dresses and of course the infamous pink jackets for the girls!

This version of the stage show (and I have seen a few over the years) stays very close to the 1971 original, in that it is a little grittier than the movie. It’s set in Chicago rather than California, the boys (known here as the Burger Palace Boys and not the T-Birds) have a few run ins with the cops and there is a fight planned rather than the famous car race. However that’s all minor details and the story of Danny and Sandy stays at the heart!
The big numbers we all know and love are all there and performed brilliantly, Grease Lightening and Beauty School Drop Out stood out particularly for me. There are a few extras that are unique to the stage show including the fabulous “Freddie My Love” that Marty gets to sing early on, and “Those Magic Changes”, both of which are really strong too.
We are reminded very subtly at the beginning that it’s a performance and not a sing a long, but that we can all join in and take pictures when they get to the mega mix at the end!
This was a fabulous idea and meant everyone could enjoy the show properly and then after the bows, we could all take to our feet and show off our best Grease Lightening moves and more – and everyone did!
The show continues in Blackpool until Saturday August 24th, with evening shows at 7.30pm, plus a Saturday matinee.
My tweenagers thoroughly enjoyed it too, so whether you want a night out with friends or you are looking for a school holiday treat, if you like great songs, amazing dance routines and a happily ever after ending, we would definitely say that Grease is the Word!
