There’s something undeniably special about seeing a classic musical come to life on stage, and Fiddler on the Roof at The Palace Theatre, Manchester, is a perfect reminder of why some stories stand the test of time. From the moment the orchestra struck its first note, the atmosphere shifted; the audience was transported to another time and place.
This was my first time seeing the production, and I arrived with no expectations. What unfolded was a beautifully told story filled with warmth, humour, and heart, brought to life by an exceptional cast. Even without knowing the plot beforehand, I found myself completely immersed in the world of Anatevka, swept up by its rich storytelling, emotional depth, and unforgettable music.

About Fiddler on the Roof
Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most beloved and enduring musicals of all time. Set in the fictional village of Anatevka, Imperial Russia in 1905, it tells the story of Tevye, a poor but proud Jewish dairyman determined to uphold his traditions as the world around him shifts. My Review
I walked into the theatre with no expectations, but I left understanding exactly why Fiddler on the Roof is considered a true heavyweight of the stage. It’s warm, funny, thought-provoking, and constantly moving, wrapped in a nostalgic charm.
What makes this production so special is its ability to balance humour and heart while exploring universal themes of family, identity, and resilience. Tevye (Matthew Woodyatt) and Golde (Jodie Jacobs) shine as the beating heart of the show. As parents navigating a changing world, trying to honour their beliefs and protect their family, their performances are full of nuance, strength, and emotion. You can feel their internal struggles, and it’s impossible not to root for them from curtain rise.
The entire cast is outstanding, each performer bringing energy and authenticity to their role. The staging and choreography flow seamlessly, creating a sense of community and celebration that radiates from the stage. I don’t think I stopped smiling the entire time.
This production of Fiddler on the Roof is everything a great musical should be, joyful, moving, and unforgettable. It’s a classic that makes you want to see it all over again the next day. This is one not to miss.
