*This post has been created in collaboration with The Family Holidays Company.

The magic of winter is just around the corner and we can’t wait for the holidays! The wonderful Christmas Markets, the beautiful ornaments, the ice skate rinks, the occasional snowflakes, the Christmas sales… who doesn’t love winter? Sure, the temperatures drop, but with so many reasons to be joyful, we tend to forget about the cold!

If you are looking for a winter family break, we have some suggestions for you. From city breaks to ski holidays or even exotic escapes, here are some great ideas for your holiday:

Lapland Santa and Reindeer

  1. Visit Lapland

Can you think of a better place to visit Santa than his home in Finland? Lapland is situated in Finland’s northernmost area and it’s known for the varied subarctic wildlife, beautiful ski resorts and natural phenomena such as Northern lights and the midnight sun. Your kids will be delighted to meet Santa and there are plenty of fun activities for the whole family to take part in. You can ride a dog sled, a reindeer sleigh, have fun on a snowmobile, visit snow castles, meet elves and much more! Visit our website to see our 2017/2018 Lapland offers.

Ski resort Kopaonik, Serbia, lift, slope, people skiing

  1. Ski Holidays in the Alps

Holiday in Austria

Zell am See sits at the foot of Schmittenhöhe Mountain, on the eastern edge of the Kitzbühel Alps. With 41 slopes with a total length of 77 km and a snow-park, the resort has slopes for everyone from absolute beginners to experts who want to take on black slopes. Relax at one of the many ski huts and terraces and enjoy the amazing vista. With English speaking ski and snowboard instructors, the resort is ideal to try your hand at a new sport.

The Romantik hotel is the perfect retreat for your ski holiday. With an a-la-carte restaurant, luxurious indoor pool and a wellness spa at your disposal, it’s a great way to relax and unwind after a day on the slopes!

Holiday in France

Closer to home, the French Alps are another favourite family ski destination. Just a short 1 hour flight away, there are some beautiful resorts you can choose from for a family French Alps holiday: Les Carroz, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Avoriaz and many other snow-sure resorts. The picturesque resorts offer a variety of accommodation, from self-catering to 5 star luxury hotels with crèches and kids clubs.

Central Park Skating Rink, New York

  1. Visit New York

New York becomes one of the most magical cities around Christmas times. The Rockefeller Center is one of the most visited spots in the city, for its beautiful decorations and 70 feet Christmas tree, strung with 5 miles of Christmas lights and topped with a Swarovski crystal star! Take in the superb views from Top of The Rock, warm up in one of the many quirky coffee shops, visit the art galleries or listen to the legendary Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.

We’re taking our first Christmas break this year – skiing, in Italy. Everyone’s so excited about it. It’ll be hard to go back to a ‘normal’ Christmas at home afterwards! There are some lovely ideas here.

Ooh lots of great ideas here Karen! Lapland is firmly in number one place on our family travel wish list! I’ve been to NYC just before Xmas and it was magical (and cold, very cold!)

I would love to go to Lapland with my daughter – I went a few years back and it was magical enough as an adult, but she would go crazy for all the snow. Lots of very tempting ideas!
