Last night my children (both 11) and I were lucky enough to be invited to see the stage show of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Opera House in the Blackpool Winter Gardens. This lavish production is currently touring the UK and has made Blackpool its home for 3 weeks over Christmas (it’s on until December 30th).
Spoiler alert … It is wonderful!

From the minute the curtain goes up you are treated to almost back to back fabulous song and dance routines. In fact I’d forgotten how many wonderful songs there are in this musical, Chu Chi Face, Old Bamboo, Truly Scrumptious, We Three, Hushabye Mountain and so many more! All performed beautifully with decadent costumes and superb choreography, including some excellent dancing from the children’s chorus in act 2. It’s most famous song must not be forgotten of course, and as soon as we hear it, the audience are thrilled and are clapping along in time!

Jemima and Jeremy are delightful, both really strong young actors with great voices and make a very believable sibling pair. Truly (Ellie Nunn) is warm, engaging and really talented and CaractacusPotts both young (Adam Garcia) and old (Liam Fox) are fabulous in their roles. The 2 spies (Michael Joseph and Adam Stafford) are laugh out loud funny and The Viviene as The Child Catcher is “hide under your coat scary” in a quite brilliant way!
However the real star of the show is of course Chitty herself, and we are certainly not disappointed. She gleams, flashes her lights, floats and most magical of all really flies! No need to suspend all disbelief, she’s doing it for real right in front of your eyes – honestly!
I could write all evening about how much we all enjoyed it, but I don’t want to spoil it for you, so instead I’ll finish by giving it a great big thumbs up and say that if you are looking for a magical theatre treat for the whole family this Christmas, fly down to Blackpool because we would thoroughly recommend Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Opera House.
Absolutely wonderful, spectacular, happy show – and we three are adults if you want joy and uplifting this IS for you. Superbly produced and performed- to all involved well done . A must see show
