If Willy Wonka designed a theme park with Disney and then turned the lights up to full carnival mode, you’d get something very close to Carnival Magic. From the moment you walk through the giant elephant-lined entrance, this place feels like stepping into a glowing, technicolour Thai dream, and for families with young children, it’s pure magic.

First Impressions: Big, Bold & Brilliantly Bonkers

This isn’t your typical theme park. Carnival Magic is a night-time experience, opening in the evening for fun & dinner and building towards a huge theatrical show and illuminated wonderland. This is perfect in Thailand where in the day you want to dedicate your time to beach, pool & boat excursions! 

The scale is incredible, spanning over 40 acres of lights, colour, and spectacle and everywhere you look there’s something designed to make kids (& adults) go “WOW”.

Highlights for families:

•Carnival-style games and toy stalls. If you have a ticket for children with buffet included it includes a free gift for the children which they can use for fun & treats throughout the park – it’s totally unique and brilliant.

• Bright, interactive zones and quirky sculptures (including the world’s largest papier mache sculpture in the world AND the largest popcorn machine in the world)

• Photo spots everywhere (seriously social media heaven). The street parade is exceptional!! 

• The Kingdom of Lights—a glowing maze of millions of LEDs

The park is designed as a festival experience, with games, performances and activities happening throughout the evening from around 5.30 until 10.30. Both of our children (ages 4 & 8) LOVED the games & won TWO cuddly toys each (maybe with a bit of daddy’s help!!).

The headline act is the River Carnival Parade Show—and it’s HUGE. This is a 45 minute spectacular and quite honestly not like anything I’ve ever watched – with over 150 actors on stage and puppetry which is completely unique. 

Highlights are:

• Massive floats of different themes

• Hundreds of performers

• Dazzling costumes and effects

• High-energy music and storytelling & some unexpected fun at the end!!! 

Many visitors describe it as a “spectacular visual experience” and a “must-see in Phuket”.

Important for parents:

You’ll need to hand in phones/cameras before the show into lockers which are free, which actually makes it more immersive, but worth preparing kids for!

After the main show (at around 9.30pm), you enter the Kingdom of Lights—and honestly, this might be the most magical part.

Think:

• Millions of glowing lights including some world recording breaking light installations. 

• Giant illuminated sculptures

• A calm, wander-at-your-own-pace atmosphere (or get a tram and a driver!!)

Food & Practical Bits (The Honest Part)

Let’s keep it real for parents planning a visit:

Pros:

• Buffet options with lots of choice including GF, Veggie & Vegan! 

• Easy, structured evening itinerary – while Carnival Magic offers a lot, it’s easy to navigate and walk around with young children. 

• Exceptionally clean, well-organised facilities. Check out all the toilets, as even those are super fun!!!!! 

Things to know:

• Food reviews are mixed (great variety, but not always standout quality). We loved the Carnival Pad Thai, Fries stand (how many sauces will you choose?), The Indian Section & there was a great selection of desserts but sadly, none were GF! 

• It’s not cheap, especially for families, but it is worth it for a unique Thai experience. 

• Can feel busy—timing your visit matters. To be honest though, there is enough space so it always felt quite relaxed! 

Top tip:

Arrive early, enjoy the fairground, have dinner, see the street parade, watch the show, then wait 10–15 minutes before heading to the lights to avoid crowds (a great insider trick from visitors).

Is It Worth It for Families?

Yes, with the right expectations.

Carnival Magic isn’t about rides. It’s about:

• Spectacle

• Primary school-aged kids

• Families who love Disney-style shows

• Anyone who enjoys lights, colour, and theatre

We went to Carnival Magic without any expectations but we worked out what it does best; joy, colour, and pure childhood excitement. At a time where the world can feel a bit grey and unhappy at times, this truly counteracts that!

This isn’t just a theme park, it’s an immersive experience. And for Mini Travellers families, it’s one of those places that kids will talk about long, long after the holiday ends.
