Last night, I ventured into Liverpool for a Disney extravaganza to review the UK tour of Disney’s Aladdin. Now, Disney shows are in a different league; we know that. But Aladdin is up there, as one of my favourite Disney movies. The soundtrack is stunning, you’re invested in the characters from the second it starts. So, would the stage show stand up to the legend that is Aladdin?

The movie was a massive success, celebrated for its animation, music, and Robin Williams’ performance as the Genie. It won two Academy Awards: Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “A Whole New World.”

The stage adaptation of “Aladdin” premiered at Seattle’s Fifth Avenue Theatre in 2011 before making its Broadway debut in 2014. It retains much of the animated film’s charm while adding new songs and characters to enhance the theatrical experience.
Set in the fictional Arabian city of Agrabah, the story follows Aladdin, a kind-hearted but poor “diamond in the rough.” He discovers a magical lamp containing a genie who grants him three wishes. Aladdin uses these wishes to win Princess Jasmine’s favour and thwart Jafar’s evil plans to seize the kingdom’s wealth.
My Review of Aladdin
Words can’t quite capture the magic of Aladdin; the stage, costumes, and set design are nothing short of spectacular. Aladdin is a sensory feast. The cave scene felt like a movie set—it’s hard to fathom the brilliance behind such a swift transformation.
Gavin Adams, making his professional debut as Aladdin, is astounding. He embodies the character as if he’s been on stage forever. Yeukayi Ushe was born to be the Genie; he commanded the entire theatre from his first step on stage. His presence is something I’ve rarely seen in my lifelong love of theatre. “Friend Like Me” was magical; it was Disney at its finest.
The cast and score were outstanding. Desmonda Cathabel portrayed Princess Jasmine with a modern sass that made her aspirational and timeless. Adam Strong and Angelo Paragoso added a light-hearted element with their portrayals of Jafar and Iago, providing plenty of laughs. Every member of the production shone, creating a perfect and joyous Disney bubble.
Would I recommend Aladdin? If I could attend every night, I would. It’s an instant shot of joy and happiness. I can only imagine how it looks through the eyes of a child. My goddaughters, who accompanied me, declared it the best show ever.
