West Kirby Beach

I never thought I’d live near the beach. I grew up near Manchester and never thought the beach would be part of my daily life, but now it is, I actually can’t imagine living without it. So what do we love so much about West Kirby Beach with Kids?

Before I moved I had a stressful job in Leeds and hubby lived on the Wirral. We couldn’t decide where to live.  One day I came back to Hubby’s flat after a long day in London and we went for a walk on the beach on a warm spring evening. That day I made the decision to move. Walking on the beach had lifted our spirits and the choice of where to live was made.

Now we are not just two, but a family of 5, we still head off to the beach when daily life gets too much. That might be to give the kids a run around, we are down there come rain or shine! Or it might be one of us, stopping off on our way home, to have a coffee and just watch the world go by.  The photos in this post should give you a flavour of why we love West Kirby beach.  It really is a place to escape and restore calm.

So where is West Kirby Beach?

West Kirby beach is on the West Wirral Peninsular only 12 miles from Liverpool and 18 miles from Chester.

West Kirby Beach Postcode

You can use the postcode below to find West Kirby beach using sat nav.

South Parade
West Kirby
Merseyside
CH48 0QG

You can also get to West  Kirby beach easily by train

You can use the Wirral line to get to West Kirby Station which is opposite Dee Lane and then it’s less than a 5 minute walk to West Kirby Beach.

West Kirby Beach Parking

In lots of ways getting the train is the easiest thing to do at parking at West Kirby beach is often not easy, particularly on a sunny day.

There is free parking on the promenade that runs the length of the marine lake but a lot of it is reserved for the disabled and parking here (even in Winter is tricky).

There is a larger pay and display car park just off Dee Lane next to Morrisons but it does get full.

Morrisons also has parking for up to 2 hours but only for customers, not solely beach users.

So what do we like to do at West Kirby Beach with Kids?

  1. Walk around West Kirby Marine Lake

We have done this with the kids since they were in their prams, probably one of the first walks we ever did.

It is around 2.4km round the lake and just over 1.2 miles.

2. Get an ice cream

There are a number of places to get an ice cream or a coffee near West Kirby Beach, you will not go short.

3. Walk to Hilbre Island from West Kirby Beach.

Tips : Here are some tips to keep the kids entertained on a walk.

4. It’s perfect whatever the weather.

You get all the seasons at West Kirby beach like anywhere I guess, but we love to visit whatever the weather. We might get blown about or the rain might fall but you can guarantee you’ll have fun.

We love to pop our wellies on and head out even in the middle of Winter.

5. It’s small but perfectly formed.

West Kirby Beach is only 300 metres long but it lies between a kilometre of sand dunes and a further 2 kilometres of vast sand flats exposed at low water towards Hoylake and the popular marine lake which is one of the best facilities of its kind in the north west and recently opened after refurbishment.

6. Incredible Sunsets and Sunrises at West Kirby beach.

You get some truly incredible sunrises and sunsets down at West Kirby beach which I am very fortunate to see on a regular basis.

7. Kayaking on West Kirby Marine Lake

We love to get the inflatable kayak packed up and mess about on the marine lake when we can.

8. Play free beach games on the beach.

  1. I couldn’t agree more with you and my husband would move to a beach in a flash but his commute would be too long. Gorgeous photos and I have such a sense of freedom and peace looking at them.

  2. I love the beach. I grew up on the south coast, Bournemouth beach all along to Sandbanks was my stomping ground for my teenage years. It is something I miss ALOT now I’m just south of Manchester. It’s a good 1.5-2 hour drive each way now, so it has to be planned into the tear now. I love your pictures. 🙂

  4. I spent many a happy time at that beach as a child and walking along the waterfront. It is beautiful. I would love to live by a beach. there is something so tranquil about water! At the moment, I have to make do with the river Medway. But it has its charms. Lovely post and I adore those photographs. Hugs Mrs H xxxx #SundaysStars
