Family Fun at Tattershall Lakes

Tattershall Lakes - Away Resorts
Share

At the beginning of the holidays in 2016 me and my girls were lucky enough to spend a week with my brother and his family at Tattershall Lakes in Lincoln. My Mum & Dad took the opportunity to see all of us together and checked into a B&B just down the road, as the popularity of Tattershall Lakes meant there was no smaller properties left on site when they decided to book.  Tattershall Lakes has recently been acquired by Away Resorts and they have set about a programme of re-furbishment on site that means a lot of the outdoor areas in particular are brand new.

We arrived at Tatershall Lakes on a Monday afternoon around 2pm.  Check in was really quick – we were given a map, entertainment passes, entertainment guide, keys to the lodge and off we went.

We stayed in an eight berth luxury lodge at the far end of Tatershall Lakes.  It was probably a 5 minute quick walk to the entertainment complex, ten/fifteen minutes with little ones.  It didn’t overlook a lake like most of the accommodation at Tattershall Lakes (above), as the resort has been created around 4 lakes, but this was actually better for our family as with little ones it was lovely to allow them to play outside the lodge without worrying about the lake. We even had the added benefit of a small park out the back of the lodge which the children were playing on within minutes of us arriving.  I think there is a little bit of landscaping still left to be done out the back of the lodges at the far end but that doesn’t matter a jot to the kids does it!

The lodge itself was immaculate. To be honest it looked like it hadn’t even been used, and as they were still delivering caravans and lodges to this part of the park during our stay, I think that was possible! It was a really decent size too. Three bedrooms and three bathrooms, the bedrooms even had decent sized wardrobes to put your clothes in and we just popped the suitcases themselves back in the car to keep them out of the way.

We did experience a few teething problems with our new lodge, such as the patio doors sticking and items not being available in the kitchen, but a quick call to customer services put that right immediately and even when I noticed something after the hours, the very friendly security guard took care of things very quickly.  I have to say their customer service throughout the week was excellent (not just to us) and this means a lot to families.

When I told most people we were going to Lincoln their first remark was – Oh Lincoln it’s very flat there isn’t it! Well flat it may be, but that only means it is the perfect place for biking and scooting.  We opted to take our new Micro Scooters (rather than bikes) as with all the other stuff we have to pack for a week, they fold nice and flat and we could fit all 5 in (yes me and hubby now have them too!).  Whilst the park does allow cars to drive around on site as you park next to your caravan/lodge, everyone on site drove slowly and carefully and it meant we could have lots of fun scooting around the park with the kids, in fact this was one of the things we did most often during our week at Tattershall Lakes. We scooted to the splash area, to the activities and just round and about for fun.

As we’ve got little ones we didn’t go out much in the evening whilst we were at Tattershall Lakes, favouring cooking dinner at the lodge and drinking wine in the lounge when the kids went to bed. It being July (!) the weather wasn’t warm enough to sit outside much on the fabulous decking area but maybe if we had visited in April it would have been, our weather keeps getting stranger and stranger! Definitely a reason for an off peak holiday though as lodges like ours start from £300 a week off peak.

There is an on-site shop (which does sell most basics if you run out, like wine!) however it is really quite expensive.  We favoured using the local co-op to top up our food shop which is only a mile down the road.  Speaking of food, I arranged for a Tesco food shop to be delivered to the lodge when we arrived. Check in was from 2pm so I booked it for between 3pm and 4pm and simply put the park as the address. They called me on arrival (make sure you put a couple of mobile numbers on the order as phone signal is sketchy), I told them which lodge we were in and our huge food shop arrived without us having to fit it in the car – Top Tip!

There are loads of kids activities on at Tattershall Lakes, absolutely loads. However I do need to stress that you need to book these online before you go, and for the free ones as soon as you arrive on-site. These activities book up very quickly at peak times and we had some disappointed kids when we arrived for one mornings activities and hadn’t realised you needed to book.

We did however manage to do quite a few of the activities and the kids particularly enjoyed badge making, the dancing competitions, pottery and listening to stories.  We also took some activities and games for them to play in the lodge too and they loved this Cool Cardz set!

If our kids had been over 5 I think they would have had an even better time with all the activities on at Tattershall Lakes.  There is an outdoor film on twice a week which I really fancied but it started a little late for our tinies (they do need to wait for it to go dark) and the zorbing and the adventurous water slides in one of the lakes looked amazing.

Ours however just loved playing in the park and in the brand new Splash Zone! If it had been warm every day I don’t think we would ever have left!

We swam a couple of times, the pool is quite small for the size of the park, but to combat this the pool operates a time slot system and at busy times you get allocated a coloured band for an hours slot. This is a great idea to keep everyone happy.  We went at 10am and left by 11am.  I know the park are looking into trying to increase the size of the pool, but for now there is the brilliant splash zone.

We did manage to leave the park during the course of the week and went on day trips to Tattershall Farm Park (review to follow), Tattershall Castle and Skegness! Tattershall Farm Park and Tattershall Castle are both literally a stones throw away from the park and both worth a trip!

We all ate in the on-site restaurant one early evening after an afternoon watching the kids on the park and in the splash zone. The food is British pub food, burgers, bangers and mash, gammon and chips and the like.  It wasn’t overly expensive but I can’t tell you the final bill cost (thanks Mum and Dad!) but the drinks were a reasonable price and it didn’t feel as though they were over charging you which it often can at similar places.

One thing I need to point out is that the park is right next door to an RAF base training fighter pilots. The planes are in the sky throughout the day and at times were incredible to watch.  The planes are really very noisy though (my Dad loved them and went on a tour of the base which he loved and was longer than my Mum could cope with!) and to have to stop your conversation every time they go past does get slightly annoying, they can also be quite scary for the little ones when you first arrive but they soon get used to them.  If you want peace and quiet (and we probably like a little more than these planes provide) then this park possibly isn’t for you. If you like the show which people clearly do (as they return year after year) then definitely book.

In summary we had a really fun time at Tattershall Lakes it was excellent value for money and our kids really enjoyed it. We loved scooting and playing on the park but you can fill the day with activities if that’s your thing too.  We loved the look of the whole park and enjoyed the outdoor activities a great deal.

It’s not fair to say that we will return, as we very rarely go anywhere twice, however I would definitely return to another Away Resorts site and quite fancy trying out Barmouth Bay next!

  1. We LOVE Lodge holidays and your lodge certainly looks brand new Karen. I have heard of Tattershall Lakes but didn’t realise there was so much to do on site. I will keep it in mind if we ever venture near to Lincoln x
