So which ski resort does offer the Best Value Skiing? With the ski season almost upon us, (and I know I can’t wait!) Tesco Bank has released its annual Ski Index, which is the only index in the world to chart which resorts have the best value skiing per kilometre of piste. This metric gives a good indication into the price of ski holidays more generally, and helps Tesco shoppers be more price savvy before they take to the slopes.

When you’re travelling with children and considering skiing, finding out which ski resort offers the best value skiing is essential as all your costs are doubled, or trebled depending on how many children you are taking and how many are learning to/can ski!

So what do we know from the stats?

This year, almost without exception, the price of skiing has risen dramatically. Leading the pack is Bulgaria, which despite often being seen as a very cost effective option, has increased in price by 65.6% since last year. The USA and Canada are also well above average with increases in prices of 28% and 25.1% respectively, while Andorra is at the lower end of the scale, with a price increase of only 11%. One of the few exceptions, and for those willing to venture further afield, is Argentina where skiing is 11% cheaper than last year.

According to the research undertaken by Tesco Bank these increases in price are mostly due to the fluctuating exchange rates since the summer, meaning British skiers are getting less piste for their pound this year compared to last.  It’s down to Brexit again!

However, a new study from Tesco Bank of 2,000 UK adults has found that despite this increase in price, more than a third of people are still considering a skiing holiday this year.

Skiing in Switzerland

Consumer research shows that 42% of those surveyed would choose a skiing holiday in Switzerland, a seemingly wise move as three of the top 10 best value ski resorts in the world are based in Switzerland, and Swiss prices have only risen by a more modest 15% since last year. The top two resorts in the Index – both Swiss – have also reduced their prices this year, helping them to beat all the other ski resorts in the world into the much coveted first position in the Index.
