Beverley Holidays, located in Paignton, Devon, is a multi-award winning group of 3 holiday parks: Beverley Park, Beverley Bay and Beverley View and this is our review of Beverley Park.

Fondly known as the English Riviera, this popular part of South Devon has just scooped a record 6 blue flag beach awards. It is Beverley Park that is the all-action site for tents, motorhomes and touring caravans that we have come to stay at for 3 nights. It also has a large selection of static caravans available to rent too and some of these even have hot tubs!

I love that the name ‘Beverley Park’ is inspired by pop sensations the Beverley Sisters and the site first opened its doors for family holidays in 1959. Beverley Park has come a long way since its humble beginnings over 60 years ago when the park opened with just 10 caravans, a few tents and a shop. You still get the feeling that this is a family run business (indeed it is in its third generation) and that is managed and run by passionate individuals.

Many families book to stay here year after year so when I was asked if I’d like to bring my family along, 2 adults and 3 kids, for a visit we jumped at the chance to see what its all about. The site is dog friendly so we took our pooch, Molly, along for the stay too.

First impressions when we arrived were that the site was well maintained and the staff were friendly. On site facilities for campers include the usual toilet block and showers, family bathrooms, dishwashing stations, waste disposal points, a laundrette and also for dogs an exercise area and a warm doggy shower (both the dog things are in Beverley Bay which is over the road). For food and drink there is a large, well-stocked Nisa shop with off-licence; Jetty Lounge, Bar and Terrace; Starlights Bar and The Catch Takeaway on Beverley Park. If you venture over to Beverley Bay there is also the Ocean Sports Bar.

All this is great but the thing that should set Beverley Park apart from your regular campsites is the large selection of leisure facilities and entertainment on offer. This includes (in no particular order): 3 swimming pools (indoor and outdoor on Beverley Park and outdoor on Beverley View), gym, hot tub, sauna, steam room, outdoor play ground, soft play, crazy golf, table tennis tables, pool tables, amusement arcade, nightly bingo and a range of daytime and evening activities run by the staff. It seems that there really is something for everyone.

After checking in at Reception we were shown to our pitch which had lovely sea views. The sun shone brightly so we raced to the pool to refresh ourselves after a long trip. Hubby and the boys tried the outdoor one but it was really cold so we all settled on playing in the indoor tropical pool instead. Afterwards, we tried our luck in the arcades on the 2p machines and much to the delight of the kids they won some little treats. We looked in on the Bingo in the bar which was hugely popular before heading back for a BBQ at the caravan.

Next day, after a lie in, we headed to the beach for a few hours and it was really very pleasant. We picked a beach that the dog was welcome on and the children enjoyed paddling in the sea and building sandcastles while Molly played with her new doggy friends! It was beginning to feel like we were abroad but unfortunately the bad weather set in as soon as we got back to the campsite. The forecast was storms so we took the awning down, just in case!

The rain continued into the next day but we’re not the type of family that just stays inside the caravan so we were keen to check out some of the local attractions. We spent a really enjoyable and interesting couple of hours at Dartmouth Castle (via a journey on the car ferry which was very exciting!) and had a quick trip up to see Totnes Castle, making the most of our new English Heritage passes.

However, we haven’t even scratched the surface of things on offer in this area as Paignton Zoo, Splashdown Quaywest water park, National Trust Compton Castle, National Trust Greenway (beloved holiday home of Agatha Christie) and Occombe Farm are all close by and are all highly rated.

On returning to the site we had another dip in the pool and I took the opportunity to have a turn in the jacuzzi while it was quiet.

Disappointingly the exciting daytime and evening activities for kids are largely at an extra expense. They sounded really good fun but at £4-£6 per child (and £9.50 for the Virtual Reality Experience), it quickly adds up for our 3 to do them. There were only 4 free activities suitable for our children during the whole week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday) and three of these only ran for half an hour each!

There is a specific Beverley and Sandy Shakedown Time for kids in Starlights Bar from 7.30 – 8.30 pm every night which was good fun for the kids and finished off the day well for them. We’d have liked to have seen some of the shows on offer in the Starlight Bar but as they didn’t start until 9pm it was too late to keep our kids out for.

Overall we had a pleasant stay and the children were disappointed to leave the pool and arcade behind! If you are looking for a site that is close to the beach, loads to do locally and plenty of on-site entertainment to boot, then this may well be the campsite for you.
