Mini Travellers - Newborough Beach, Anglesey

The walk from Newborough Beach to Llanddwyn Island must be one of the most stunning in all of the UK, and child friendly too. We’ve been visiting here for the last 3 to 4 years and just can’t stop coming back.

Situated on the south western corner of Anglesey, you can easily access this walk from the beach car park. Type postcode LL61 6SG into your sat-nav and follow the road all the way down. There is a fee to enter the car park (approx £4, so bring pound coins!).

There are numerous footpaths through Newborough Forest which are all well signposted, but we always keep to the shore. The views of the Yr Eifl mountains in the LlÅ·n Peninsula and the peaks of Snowdonia are just too good to miss, and the kids just love running into the water (bring a swim suit, and/or a change of clothes!).

The circular walk over to the island is very flat, but approx 4 miles in length. Once you reach the island you can often be greeted by the sight of wild horses, and on the far side of the island (another 10–15 minute walk) is the old lighthouse. Bring a camera, the views of the lighthouse with the entrance to the Menai Strait are breathtaking.

You will need to bring a picnic (lots of drinks!) too as there are no shops or cafes on the island. There are no toilets either, so make sure the kids visit the toilet at the car park.

The island gets cut off by the sea twice a day, so be sure to check the tide times before you go!
We often finish the trip with a visit to Hooton’s farm café in Brynsiencyn. Their all day breakfasts and BBQ’s are too good to miss.

An inexpensive day trip, with stunning views, sea and sand and it’s good exercise too. What more could you ask for?

This lovely post about Newborough Beach has been written by May Mahon who visited Newborough Beach with her young family. We will definitely be visiting soon.
